ARE HYBRID CARS TOO QUIET?

Car Dealers find it's hard to keep hybrids on the lot.

"As soon as we get them in there, they're sold," said one Toyota dealership.
Hybrids like the Toyota Prius are good on gas, good for the environment, and maybe a bit sneaky.
Rene Latorre of the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI) has concerns over the hybrids, especially the level of noise they cause – or the lack thereof.
"Someone who's blind or visually impaired, when they need to cross the street...not having the ability to use full vision, you need to rely really heavily on your ears to cross," said Latorre.
A new federal bill would require hybrids to make more noise.
Advocates of the bill said it was best to get it on the books now before electric and hydrogen cars hit the road, saying those would be even quieter.
If the bill passes, it would go into effect in about two years.
"I think people don't have a lot of understanding or don't think about it," said Latorre. "They think in visual terms, and don't realize how important it is."
Yet the hybrids are only really quiet, when they go very slowly. Other than that, they sound like every other car on the road.
"No one is advocating that we don't have these cars," Latorre said. "They are obviously wonderful for the environment, and that's a great thing."
A great thing, she thinks, could be better with a little fine tuning.

I could see it as a concern in residential areas.

In fact, recently in California, a blind woman got her foot run over by a hybrid, as it backed up.

Good Idea or Bad Idea?

It's a Good Idea.
It's a Bad Idea.
As long as I don't have to pay to get my Hybrid done.
Make mine sound like the Ice Cream Truck, watch those kids look for it but can't find it.

Voted : It's a Good Idea.
I say this as someone who almost got hit by one in a parking ramp myself. The lady even stopped to talk to me about how it happens all the time, but I think she was just tooting her own horn for being environmentally conscious.

In principle its a good idea. but people wont volunteer to have it done. it will have to be law.

dont have many in the UK i dont think its feasible. tho i dont know i assume the batteries wouldnt last long enough. It takes me nearly an hoyr and a half to get on the motorway(freeway) from my house and thats typical of most english drivers situation. Nowhere in that would you get chance to use the engine.

you know actually, it has merrit in my opinion. it's like those walk/don't walk lights that make a noise for the visually impaired. interesting. probably needs more looking into, but you could be onto something.
