Voted : Woolworth's
We used to go to Woolworth's all the time when I was a kid. And would go grocery shopping at Piggly Wiggly's. Alot of the army surplus stores are going out of business too. They have some great stuff for camping, hunting, and fishing. But so many people are getting the same stuff from Walmart now. It's cheaper, but it's crap and you're lucky if some of it lasts for over a season. We have a farmers market near my home town. It was set up so that the sellers would have a nice place to set up and sell. Well, since they charge more for booth rental than what some of those old farmers would make in a day, guess what happened. The farmers went back to selling out of parking lots and on the side of the road. And they get more business than the farmers market does. LOL Namely because the farmers market there has turned into a venue for people selling crafts and organic foods for outrageous prices under the guise of "organic" and "handmade". I'd much rather support the old farmers in the parking lots anyday. A little sevin dust on my tomatoes aint gonna hurt nothing.
Piggly Wiggly is still live and well in Wisconsin. They even recently expanded the one by my grandma's house!
Yeah, I've heard that they're still around. I really don't remember what happened to the ones here. I know a local chain took their place. But at the time, I would think that the chain that took their place was not in the position to buy them out. They are now though. They've grown and have bought out two different local convenient store chains and several local pharmacies.
Voted : McCrory's
I miss McCrory's.
Voted : Gee Bee's
I used to work in an old Gee Bee's store converted to a corporate office.
woolworths still going strong in the uk. and farmers markets are on the increase, yay for locally produced goods.
Lazarus was bought out by Macy's, as were Marshall Field and Kaufmann's. The Mall at Tuttle Crossing in Columbus, Ohio literally has two Macy's stores because Macy's bought out Kaufmann's, which took over the lease for Marshall Field three years before, and oh yeah, Marshall Field was eventually taken over by Macy's too... Lion, L.S. Ayres, and McAlpins are all part of Dillard's now. Though I am personally surprised that Columbus does not yet have a Dillard's. Looks to me like another five years and all the mall anchors will be Macy's, JCPenney, or Dillard's. Everybody knows Sears is pretty much screwed at this point, and there are rumors that Dillard's will soon buy the Elder-Beerman chain out.
