RESTAURANT INSPIRED FOOD FOR CATS... ARE WE TOTALLY INSANE?

[+] ballot by LCD

I was watching this commercial for "fancy feast". Gourmet chicken, tuscani inspired chicken breast with hint of herbs on a bed of brown rice etc.

Are we totally insane?

Let me say first and foremost, I loved my cats. I would go as far as to say I would much rather feed my cat than a bum on the street. I shed tears for them when they were lost/had to be given away, and I still remember them fondly.

However, how crazy are we to feed animal gourmet restaurant inspired meals when there are children starving and dying each and every day?

what is your opinion? Pet lovers, I would love to hear your opinion on the matter.

Yes, we are insane
No, they deserve it

They do the same for dogs. Like they care. Dogs eat their own poop.

Some people live totally through their pets, and what they feed their pets, feeds their soul. Going to a gourmet restaurant would be a great treat for these people, so they think it's a great treat to their pets, too, which they erroneously think of as furry little people. They do not realize their pets would be just as happy eating a freshly killed (or not freah) small animal--and proably would be more anmial-socially satisfied.

"and what they feed their pets, feeds their soul"

that's an amazing perspective.

I wouldn't go so far as to call them insane, as I can understand why people do that. The little elderly woman that I used to care for feeds her dog what she cooks for herself, provided that it's something that's actually good for him. When her friends or kids aren't there, the little dog is all she has. And she spoils him rotten.

I'm not going to say that they deserve it though either, because a lot of the fancy canned foods are actually less healthful than dry foods.

A friend of ours spent the extra money to buy his dog canned Pedigree brand food, thinking it was better because it was more expensive and meaty looking. As a result, the dog had diarrhea all the time. When we kept her for a week while breeding her with our stud dog, we fed her the dry food that our dog ate. The diarrhea stopped, she had better color in her eyes and gums, and her coat looked so much more shiny and healthy.

I'd rather feed mine road kill than feed them some of the stuff that comes in cans.

wow, did you tell the owners? did they stop feeding it canned food?

or do they prefer diarrhea?MAG_rofl

LOL Yeah, we told them. He eventually changed foods. I didn't want to change food at first, because it was his dog and not mine. But the first time that dog shot out a load in my house before she could get out the door, that was it! Dry food for her.
by Grumpy_Person on Thu Apr 10, 08 1:04am [+]

Some canned foods are probably good though, but most of them are mostly water. So is meat, technically. But a lot of the canned foods on the market aren't all meat. It's also got fillers in it like soy and various glutens, mixed with water to puff it up and make it look good.

Our cats and dogs eat all dry food. With the exception of the strange things our dogs drag up. They've brought home a couple of strange looking furry feet that I've yet to identify. I think though it's probably rabbit parts that the family down the road slaughter for their freezer.

Not only that but ask a vet and they will tell you with no hesitation that this shit is bad for any animal.

What next chocolate for hamsters?

Only people with more money than sense would buy this crap. you know the ones. the ones that think their animals are actually having human thoughts.

It's not really gourmet real restaurant food though. It's "inspired" by real dishes served in restaurants. It's still made just like all pet food. Read a can and you'll see. And there are people who eat pet food...I saw a special on it. Very sad.
by patch22us on Thu Apr 10, 08 10:29am [+]

Quirk99 is right by the way. Most pet food is not really safe.

Sorry, but my Cat often eats real shrimp and Lobster and Chicken. Not all the time, but we try to balance out traditional pet food with human food (bland, not covered in butter or anything). I'm not going to apologize for that because it's no one's business how we live or spend our money. Besides, people throw food out all the time, which in my opinion is worse.

^ even if they cover your carpets in crap and die? hmm I assume you dont actually like animals then really.
by quirk99 on Fri Apr 11, 08 4:16am [+]

my cat had a big treat everytime I opened a can of solid albacore.

but that was rare, I always fed her dry cat food mixed with the canned one I bought on sale. when she was a kitten, the can did give her the runs. I guess now I know why...
by LCD on Fri Apr 11, 08 2:23pm [+]

LMAO did I say give them the food all the time? No
Of course you have to use common sense. Well depending on who that is they may not have any.

Canned foods are used as treats for my home. Same as when I have pizza if they behave they get a little chunk.

And as for the vet comment one of my dog's needs special food and almost the whole damn list is canned food which I can't get any for her so we get her lot's of dry dog food that cost's $50 a bag and hamburger for treats.

Are most humans treats for ourselves healthy either? No that's why they are treats.
by fivenotes on Sat Apr 12, 08 10:53pm [+]

I don't actually give my cats that gourmet canned food. I feed them "special diet" food. I have to, because my one cat developed a urinary tract infection, which came from feeding the cats food that was either cheap or not healthy enough, or even people food that was too rich for their diets. Did you know that feeding your cat tuna fish is bad and milk sometimes gives them the runs? Two of my cats love drinking milk, so I only give it to them once in awhile, but in moderation.
