ARE PROBLEMS AND SUFFERING ALL RELATIVE?

In another ballot, the ballot maker posed the question asking if Americans are bitter. Her ballot asks relevant and legitimate questions and points out some very real problems in the United States that we are all aware of.

I responded that I am "Happy," and made a comment that basically addressed the fact that in the universal sense, Americans, Canadians, Australians, Europeans, etc., live relatively good lives. My comment was in no means trying to dismiss or lessen what the ballot maker pointed out, it was simply that in response to her question, I replied that I was content and that for me, the problems billions of people around the world face, make ours in the Western world seem almost inconsequential.

Anyway, my comment was called into question and I think it was due to misunderstanding my point.

We all know that there are problems in this country and in fact, in all nations. They are discussed constantly. But in reality, can we collectively say that our problems are at all as severe as those experienced by so many people, such as:

People starving to death every second of the day, people living under brutal and very harsh conditions where they are tortured and killed for thier religious and political views, people who live with no water, no sewage and who live in shacks, people who live in war ravaged environments, like Dafur.

I'm starting to see that when you look around and learn about what billions of people endure daily, in what is passing as "life," people in the First world really should be more thankful and more grateful for what we have.

Do you agree, or do you feel that we should complain and obsess about our "problems" so much?

We should worry more about our "problems"
We should focus more on helping all the suffering people in the world

The Pope was commenting on these ideas recently and that, along with some other information I recently received, made me realize how selfish we are in the United States and in Europe and Canada, etc.

The Pope talked about "Relativism" and that people are being conditioned to no longer see absolutes, but to see many shades of gray. His belief is that this causes greater suffering because people no longer put things into perspective, since they are more concerned with their own image and their own egos.

Social Activism is also something that is gaining momentum and I guess it is more of a re-birth of a movement that has been around for 50 years. That means that you do an accounting of the problems you face or your country faces, etc. and you act accordingly.

If people are living in truly deplorable conditions and with severe problems (crisises) on a consistent, daily basis, that in reality, their problems are far worse.

I don't know, maybe I'm being ignorant. I hope not though.

P.S. in the other ballot, I totally misunderstood the real meaning. Anyway, even though I did, I guess this topic is still valid since it was the driver behind my comments in that ballot.

Very relative. I waste too much time on my own trivial problems.

I would imagine everyone feels bad about africa except the IMF and our collective governments. We do nothing to help them out. I dont care what aid countries profess to send out. it clearly isnt getting there. (unless theres a bloody tv camera)

A good life is only any use when your feel your getting a fair deal.

If theres no work, even at shitty wages then you tend to feel the government is screwing you too. which it is.

U think you know this inside patch.

once people get out in the world and witness it first hand they have a whole new appreciation for life in general. like i said it's jarring to see. my mattress is uncomfortable so i buy a new one. their straw mat is infested with bugs, so they weave a new one and still sleep on a dirt floor. my mattress cost more than they make in a year. somethings not copisetic with that.

When we tend to our own problems first, and make our own citizens feel our governtment takes care of itself, we can make more intelligent choices about how best to help others. A healthy country is a happy country.
