COMMENTS:
We 'can't' already do it. There's a difference between "knowing how to do it" and it actually being possible. You can't combine any 2 things and create a viable embryo. Even a human/chimp cross would not be a guarantee, though that would probably be possible.

If it was possible, no, we shouldn't do it. The ethical problems are too huge to bother even considering it.

Voted : Yes.
But only ever volunteers that knew exactly what the science involved.

More concerned about the source of DNA.

I think we can already do it and further more what ethical problems?

I misunderstood your question I think. I thought you were talking about creating human hybrids, which has very obvious ethical baggage.

You seem to me more leaning towards giving humans certain animal traits, which will be possible pretty soon, though I doubt it is currently possible in the capactity you're thinking.

Personally, I think it's an entirely unnecessary and frivolous waste of technology to develop the kind of science we're talking about. We should focus more attention on remedying existing problems rather than creating new ones.

IDK who will be the leader. Hope not a goldfish.

Thanks for the compliment quirk. A goldfish beast? Cool. Awesome.

what do you mean "should" we genetically engineer humans with animal dna? uhh, let me call your attention to our commander-n-thief, george w. bush.

What I'm talking about are humans who can be modified on the genetic level to have gills or fur or whiskers.

Now yes this also involves people who want to mate with animals since it will be possible once they go down this road so I guess in the end it comes down to hybrids.

Um just a question. What ethical problems? I know like do we have the right to play god or create new races and do the kids want it or not etc...
by fivenotes on Mon Apr 14, 08 7:17pm [+]

oh, you're talking about humans being modified to have gills or fur or whiskers. i got it now. umm, then that would be the bush daughters.

"What ethical problems? I know like do we have the right to play god or create new races and do the kids want it or not etc..."

Shit, is that not enough? Anywho, at least concerning hybrids, we have absolutely no way of knowing what will become of any potential cross. We can't say "let's try to fertilize a bat with squirrel sperm so we get a fluffy tailed rodent with wings." You don't get to pick and choose what characteristics you want when you hybridize like that. Most likely, you end up with an inviable embryo or disfigured/dysfunctional and short-lived organism.

Furthermore, nobody has yet mentioned the notion of, "At what % animal do you cease to become human and start being something else?" You can't have the human species defined in some textbook as, blah blah biped, mammaries, hair etc... "Oh yeah, a few humans have gills too. And occasionally you'll find one with a tail. And some walk on all fours. One more thing, on rare occasion they have whiskers."

I'm reminded of a Southpark, which- although obviously inaccurate- showed the boys at some hippie colony where a duck f-ed a llama or something and made some freak baby whose first words were, "Ki..lll.... MEEeeeeeeeeee."

On the other side of the spectrum where you're talking about giving humans animal traits... I'm just struggling to see any reason why a self-respecting scientist would even consider messing with that. It makes for fun science fiction, but in reality it's a money and time sink to no clear end.

Yeah that was long. uwannafideaboutit?
by ThisIsNate on Mon Apr 14, 08 8:32pm [+]

^LMAO about South Park I think it was a guy with a chicken or duck:).

Well there would be normal humans I guess called something like purebred and other humans called something like altered or gene modified. Which I guess if you change someone down to their genes they can pass those on?

As for hybrids if they want they can manipulate their gene's while in the womb but that is not possible yet completely.

And yes it will happen somewhere somehow plus don't forget super-strength and night vision. We also have a thing called wars and hate so if for no other reason it can and will come to pass.

Plus yes a lot of religious groups are against it as well.
