Voted : yes, prisoners should pay us
Of course if they do this the issue of having things they want will come up and be allowed to a point.

I thought they did on some level? Maybe it was a proposal I read about. But yes, it seems like they should be paying for their own incarceration...why should the tax payer have to pay for their crimes?

My question is, how do you "make" them work? The only ways I can think of to make someone do something are through fear or incentives. I can think of no ethical way to use fear and incentives puts us in the same cost quagmire we just crawled out of. The only simple solution I can think of involving incentives would be making them work for prison credits, which they use to buy luxury items. They would have to be grossly overpriced such that the money generated/saved through prison labor would still outweigh the goods' prices so the restitution aspect could still be fulfilled. Really though, I agree that it's ridiculous that we essentially are paying for the opportunity to babysit criminals.
^ good point. I would rather think that suspension of privileges rather than credits. if they don't work, they get less food, no tv, no visits, etc. if they still don't work, they get to replace a soldier in afganistan.
