Capital punishment is not a deterrent to crime. This has been proven over and over. Additionally, when countries revoke the death penalty, the murder rate does not change. While there are always witnesses from the public at executions, broadcasting these execution would have several effects:
1. It shows the state engaging in what is in fact premeditated murder. Showing the state engaging in this act will by itself lower the value that society places on life. It will not make the society "safer" but rather it will brutalize the society. Revenge becomes the societal attitude not rehabilitation or any higher moral standard. By witnessing these acts, our own moral makeup is affected. Capital punishment is a moral dishonor. It is a mockery of what society claims to value the most.

As Rev. David B. Thompson, Bishop of Charleston, S.C. said, "Capital punishment feeds the cycle of violence in society by pandering to a lust for revenge. It brutalizes us, and deadens our sensitivities to the precious nature of every single human life."

2. Why not institute more vicious punishments? Guillotines could be used if the murder rate doesn't drop. Chop off the hands of thieves. We could have the executions in public stadiums where the crowds could cheer. We could have the family execute the presumed guilty. Oh wait. A recent "society" did this type of thing. The Taliban in Afghanistan. Surely, we aspire to a higher moral standard than the Taliban.

On the other hand, it is possible that the public would be so shocked and appalled that they would demand that executions be stopped. Unlikely. More likely a bunch of sickos would upload videos of such events onto youtube and similar sites where they can watch repeatedly and cheer while they watch someone convulse and die. Uplifts society doesn't it...

Executions DO NOT stop crime! Never has, never will.

People have been executed in public an private since the beginning of time. Yet crime continues unabated.

Crime is the result of people with big egos, lots of self confidence and POOR JUDGEMENT!

They ALWAYS think they can get away with it. Otherwise they would never do it.

It's like gamblers who think they're good gamblers no matter how much money they lose. They have an inflated opinion of themselves, their ability and intelligence.

The refuse to face reality and THE BAD ODDS of what they do.

Hasn't worked in Saudi Arabia though.
