VIDEO GAMES AND VIOLENCE: IS THERE A LINK ?

[+] ballot by thesoothsayer
ACTIVE Tue Apr 15, 08 - Wed Apr 15, 09

Thoughout history, long before TV or video games, there was violence, some extremely vicious and cruel based on written records... so as mankind has become more "civilized," acts of grave injury or of fatal conclusions can be carried out with modern weaponry without the physical contact that was more likely to occur in past times. It can be as easy as pushing a button or pulling a trigger... do you believe that the graphic violence in today's video games plays a role in the seemingly casual use of deadly weapons in many of the crimes used today in what many would consider minor incidents that shouldn't warrant the use of such force ?

I don't believe there's a link to video games and crime

nice grammar :D Freudian?

Anywho

The link works both ways. Most games that attempt to shock are based on reality anyway.

Notice games about space arent relative to our reality and so the violence isn't as noticable. Blowing up a planet isn't considered real. Wiping out 200 globzoids no matter how much green goo they throw out its never real.

So reality in games can only come from reality in life.

If some stupid kid decides to walk into a store and demand like a gangsta they give him the cash hes more likely to get his head blown off. thats the reality.

If we are to ask if games create violence. then no. if anything they pacify it. like a huge valium.

No point getting angry. take it out on your ps3. or whatever.

Games allow you to commit crime. So of course theres a link. It just works in reverse.

^you will always get exceptions to that rule. But I know I'm right on this. Only someone likely to do something fucked up anyway would get cues from a video game.

the people who write these programs know as much about gangsta as i do about how kev stops his arse from expanding. :D

that's an interesting theory quirk. there's been a great deal of research on the correlation between violence in various media and video games and the rise in violent crimes being committed by teenagers in particular. most of it is split between your theory and the other side, which feels there is a direct connection.

personally i think it's really some where in the middle. the media glorifies violence and a rebel lifestyle and obviously that's not going to permanently appeal to or impact people of a certain socio-economic status. i think more than anything people with a troubled upbringing are more likely to committ a violent crime and the constant exposure to violence in the media and in video games does play a part in that. would they committ the crime anyway? probably. but i think you're right that now the games draw their violence from reality. i don't know that was always the case.

hence why i only play shoots & ladders.

Shoots and ladders? That's too violent for me. I play checkers but thats a bit rough too.

If that was true with how many video games I have played you know how much of a killer I would be?
I would make all the killer's in the world look like lazy people at their job ok.

Of course this might have helped grow my sick humor lol.

Well one thing I forgot to think about was people who already have the thoughts before playing video games or watching movies but it just would feed their hunger and might make them worse or not.

It's still up to the person whether they do these things in life or not.

Sorry 'bout the freudian slip, should read I believe there's a link to video games and crimes... I think the thought precedes the act, and the seeds are planted subconsciously... in some people...
