PROPHETS OF DOOM

[+] serious ballot by patch22us
ACTIVE Thu Apr 24, 08 - Sun May 04, 08

Lately, I've seen an upturn in rehtoric from what are commonly called "Prophets of Doom." I don't know if it is a generational thing, but people born in certain eras, seem to be much more pessimistic and defeatist.

What I've noticed is that more and more people seem to want doom and gloom and almost seem to get joy out of fear-mongering and more often than not, will manipulate facts and reality to get the desired effect on people's emotions intentionally, or will be so eager to seize just the negative, will spread the "bad news" without including the parts that balance the issue out.

I am not the only one who feels this way. Some people have said that the internet is part of the problem and that it all depends on how you use the net.

Example 1: A person hears or reads part of a story on the internet. That story has many components and facets. This person takes the most "alarming" news and runs with it, usually leaving out many of the pertinent facts. The result is that they spread fear and doom and gloom, without actually giving the full story.

Person 2: This person, understanding that a news story is rarely a static, one time event, knows that there will be different viewpoints and facts on the story. This type of person reads multiple sources, does some research and then comes to a conclusion and presents the pertinent facts, without tainting it with doom and gloom. This person continues to follow the story, knowing that as it develops, it levels off and what results is often, the doom and gloom was baseless.

Am I just a complete naive person who lives in a dream world, or do you too notice this?

I forgot. This in all honesty is not about ANY ONE ON THIS SITE! Honestly, it's really an observation many more people are making in life.

Yes, and historians tell us that people have been this way for ages...probably since time began. The internet just means that Prophest of Doom can now spread their gloom to everyone. And I really am NOT talking about you! :) Honestly.

But it's a phenomenon in that people seem to be getting worse.

On the news the other day, they had a pannel of Political experts and do you know what they said? They said that we have been discussing the same issues and "crisies" in every election since the 1800's: Immigration, the military, Illness, Social programs, International relations, etc., etc. The issues are virtually the same, but people think that their own time is the worst. The darkest and the most dangerous.

All I know is that far too many people today will spread false stories and half-truths and conspiracy theories, just to make other people feel as scared and ad gloomy and doomed as they feel. I take it as my job as a "Superhero" to fight that. :)
