I read an article today that made me rethink my views on china. From a British point of view we have been trading with china for hundreds of years via hong kong. But now the floodgates have opened and the chinese people have been exposed to western culture and they want it with a passion. This leaves the chinese government with a problem. a very big problem. Up till now chinese people were blithely indiferent to western culture seeing it as frivolous and superficial (they were right but no matter) safely walled off and doing as they were told. modern chinese however are different. they feel they have just as much right to materialist things as everyone else (and ofc they are right about this, no matter how wrong the concept).

The Chinese government as I said aren't equipped to deal with this and come onto the world stage at the same time. But come out they must.

When people (chinese japanese english american icelandic afghani etc) feel they are missing out on personal freedoms they tend to rebel. when theres over a billion of them rebelling....

All positions of significant power in the state structure and in the army are occupied by members of the Communist Party of China which is controlled by the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, a group of 5 to 9 people, usually all men, who make all decisions of national significance. As the role of the Army is to enforce these decisions in times of crisis, support of the PLA is important.

How long, do you reckon, the support would last?

China's people are waking up to reality. It's quite an important event in world history. The chinese history makes us ALL fade into insignificance, When We were building boats and discovering the americas they had already done that decided it was worthless, gone home and scrapped their entire exploration fleet.

So before I digress any further is it possible that the biggest threat China posses at this moment in history is to itself?

Yes, it may well be

The skyrocketing need for oil in China is what's going to cause a lot of problems in the near future.

I was reading a story a couple of months ago that said the Chinese government is very nervous about an uprising. The story basically said that because China's population is so large, that their economic progress could never really benefit the majority and that while a small fraction is now doing well, more people are going drastically below the poverty line than ever before.

It went on to say that their military is part of the problem because regularly, the PLA goes into rural towns that may have factories or may be doing well, and they take over the industry for themselves. Basically the military leadership steals the company or makes them pay them huge fees for protection. It was likened to a shakedown by the Mafia.
