We really cannot know who were the better thinkers of old because if a woman were to make it known she was a great thinker, she would probably have been burned as a witch or sent to an insane asylum by their husbands, or roasted over coals, etc., etc. Intelligence in women was considered to be a sign of demon possession, so women kept what they thought under wraps. This shows you they were intelligent. a stupid women would have "cast her pearls before swine" and died for it. I am sure women thinkers had tolerant husbands who probably wrote under their own names what their wives said,actually keeping their wives alive. Generally, however, marriageability was measured on how stupid a woman acted. One marriage book for women written in the 1800's advised womnen if they wanted to find a husband, they should act like an imbecile.
My choice is women, however, because they are not dorky enough to ask this question.
forgetmenot, your excuses are just that, excuses. Why not look at the numerous studies and research in today's schools and universities? Time and time again, they prove that males are more intelligent than females, specifically in the sciences and mathematics.
Often, but not always, those who excel is science and math do not excel in the language arts and vice versa. Some of the very highest IQ's go to those who do not ezxcel in the sciences.
