WHAT MAKES YOU, YOU?

I was watching an old star trek episode, where they were "transporting" themselves. Supposedly that involves being pulled apart by atom by atom, and have that "pattern" reassembled at another spacetime using different atoms in the same pattern.

doesn't that mean that you effectively die, and a doppelganger is created in your place?

How about when you go to sleep at night? You cease your consciousness, and who is to say when you wake up, the consciousness you have is the same one you went to sleep with? for all you know, someone could have killed you while you are asleep and replaced you with a robot that's programmed to think like you in every way.

what makes you, you?

your self awareness
other's perception of you
your contiguous spatial positioning
genetics, experiences, personal variations

Voted : your self awareness
Your mind. Your soul.
Even if the robot thing happens it's not you and dog's can tell the differance. Of course that goes for aliens too.

Also on Earth our atoms are from other lifeforms by now anyways.

Is the doppelganger a 100% copy? The body may have changed but their mind has not and if they have then it's not the same person.

As for the consciousness this may explain why you can wake up pissed off. Also you have a sub-consciousness that runs while you sleep which is you.

I wonder why is it that everytime they send the red-shirt dude down to a planet to almost certain death, they don't just recreate his atoms from the transporter. 017

Interesting. When I go to sleep, my physical body is in effect, suspended in a form of time freeze. My true self, my spirit, then travles to hell, Heaven, all over the Cosmos and I impart my words of wisdom on other beings, including you weak Mortals. In fact, just last night I had to go see someone trapped in hell. In case anyone cares, Adolf Hitler says "hi!" to everyone. :) There's a plan afoot and the devli wants to try and have Hitler reborn in the body of a high-profile political figure. I'm the decider on wheter he can or not (on this one, I'm the "decider" and not Bush!) :)

Has anyone ever noticed that some of those Guest Stars (Some of the ones that died in landing parties) also starred on the day time soap opera *One Life to live*?

I don't know the answer but last year my grandmother died after a long period of senility with Alzheimer's. I am not sure she knew at the end who we were, who she was - she was self-aware to an extent but not in the way we (my family and I) were comfortable with. To us, she wasn't herself anymore, except for glimmers of memory every now and then. It was very chilling to watch her becoming less herself everyday - I kept on hoping that she was still herself somehow, but could not manifest it.

On the other hand, the Buddhists say that self-awareness is an illusion, that we are all actually manifestations of the universe and that any ego awareness or self awareness hinders us from realizing enlightment. I'm still having some trouble wrapping my understanding around that concept... although every now and then I think I get it.
