"We have heard this foolish delusion before," Bush said in remarks to Israel's parliament, the Knesset. "As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is — the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history." An interesting take on this I saw offered by Jack Kemp (former senator and VP candidate) and Newt Gingrich. They said he should have simply agreed and said "we agree, we should not negotiate or meet with terrorists (at least not without preconditions)". Obama they said, could have added "this is why I denounced Jimmy Carter for meeting with Hamas". This they said would have defused the issue or basically made Bush's comments irrelevant. Instead Democrats because they don't want to be swift-boated this year came out in force and denounced the comments (Obama, Hillary Clinton, Biden, Pelosi and others all denounced Bush). What Bush did strikes me as a political dirty trick. It was designed to make democrats respond, seem defensive and perhaps make the democrats appear like they want to meet with terrorists. I'm not sure I agree with their take on it but I think it would have made what Bush said something that wouldn't have made headlines.
