PAPER MONEY IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL!

[+] serious ballot by UncleRandy
ACTIVE Tue May 20, 08 - Sun Feb 13, 11

I would like to think that the courts have learned the error of the ways of government and are declaring paper money by itself illegal, but, alas, that is not the case.

Instead, we now are told that paper money in its present form discriminates against blind people. Nothing from the courts on whether they believe that paper money discriminates against people who stay out of debt, save money, and do not advocate inflation.

But seriously...

The U.S. discriminates against blind people by printing paper money that makes it impossible for them to distinguish among the bills' varying values, a federal appeals court ruled Today.

The ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upholds a decision by a lower court in 2006. It could force the Treasury Department to redesign its money. Suggested changes have ranged from making bills different sizes to printing them with raised markings.

The American Council for the Blind sued for such changes but the Treasury Department has been fighting the case for about six years.

While the government has been fighting to overturn the lower court ruling, it has been taking some steps toward modifying U.S. currency for the visually impaired.

The most recent currency redesign of the $5 bill introduced in March features a giant *5* printed in purple on one side of the bill to help those with vision problems distinguish the bill.

The appeals court also ruled that the U.S. failed to explain why changing the money would be an undue burden. The Treasury Department has redesigned its currency several times in recent years, and adding features to aid the blind would come at a relatively small cost, the court said.

Other countries have added such features, the court said, and the U.S. never explained what made its situation so unique.

Not all blind people agreed the money needed to be changed. The National Federation of the Blind sided with the government and told the appeals court that no changes were needed.

It shouldn't be too hard to add some braille dots in the corners, should it?
Leave the money alone.
Radio discriminates against deaf people.
Well it's about time.

Sounds reasonable.

The blind people that I've known have simply asked a friend to identify the bills so that they could mark them in braille themselves. They've done this for years.

I'm left handed but I wouldn't expect everything to be redesigned to accomodate me... some things you have to adapt to or find another way to cope...

^that is because you aren't blind and had someone rip you off by giving you the wrong amount of money back. Sad, but it happens and that is one of the reasons the case was pursued. People have a knee jerk reaction to things without first examining the facts and trying to really understand what it is like being blind.

I'm sorry soothsayer, but your comparison of being left-handed to someone being blind is not only deeply insulting but ludicrous as well.

"The blind people that I've known have simply asked a friend to identify the bills"

That doesn't help when you are out someone purchasing something when your friends aren't around. You have to trust someone gives you the right amount back.

^ Most special education/handicapped programs teach them to never pay with enough money that would warrant getting bills back for that very reason. If they do find themselves without enough loose bills to get close to the amount due, they ask for change back in all one dollar bills so they'll know that they received the correct amount back.

So how will blind people know what they are getting from the ATM drive-thru with the braille buttons on the number pad? 017

The Federal Reserve Bank itself is unconstitutional, but that's another discussion.012
