WHY ACQUIRE A TASTE

[+] serious ballot by larrynelmira
ACTIVE Sun May 25, 08 - Mon May 25, 09

I hear it all the time, "it's an acquired taste"

But unless you have no choice, it's either that or starve , why would anyone keep eating and drinking something they hate until a taste is acquired?

They think it's cool
I don't know why
I'll tell you below

Maybe, to some, it builds courage

Voted : I don't know why
Danged if I know. That's one reason I don't like gin.

Probably just for the experience, and to see what it's like. Why do people climb mountains? It's dangerous and very difficult to climb a mountain, and they probably don't get anything out of it except maybe a nice view, but some people do it - just because it's there. Probably the same goes for eating scorpions and other things of that type. I wouldn't eat a scorpion myself though (they terrify me). I think some acquired taste eventually catch on. I bet it took a heck of a long time before eating eggs and drinking milk became mainstream.

Because sometimes while the initial taste or thought of what it tastes like may turn you off, you learn to appreciate the unique flavor of whatever you are trying. For some this is true of wine and with some others it might be sushi or whatever.

honestly, I thought it was cool thing to do.

I never liked raw fish when I was growing up. In the mid 80's, it was a hip thing to do, to go to a japanese restaurant and eat all kind of slimy wiggly creatures great and small.

after a while, I did develop a taste for raw tuna, and Tobiko (flying fish caviar) - now I eat it at least once a week.

It's the ritual thing... then if you are not allergic to it, you might actually learn to appreciate it... I don't drink any more, but at first I didn't lke beer, but "everybody" else was drinking the stuff... I did aquire a taste for the stuff, but I never wanted more than one can and it had to be ice cold... I think it has something to do with the mirade of sensations and different tastes we experience regardless of our initial response to them...

I think this is the main reason why most young people drink alcohol.

I tried drinking beer, whisky and few others but I didn't like the taste so never tried again. I kinda like some wines, I wouldn't call it my beverage of choice but it's right up there with Pepsi. :)

If they can take control of things that fear them, ingest them and conquer them, maybe they think they can do this with bigger things. Take G. Gordon Liddy, who was afraid of mice and thunderstorms. He sat in a tree during a lightning storm and ate mice to get over his fears.
