Carter, who was at the Hay-on-Wye literary festival on the border between England and Wales, made the comments while discussing Iran’s nuclear program. "The U.S. has more than 12,000 nuclear weapons, the Soviet Union (Russia) has about the same, Great Britain and France have several hundred, and Israel has 150 or more,” Carter said, according to Reuters. “We have a phalanx of enormous weaponry ... not only of enormous weaponry, but of rockets to deliver those missiles on a pinpoint accuracy target.” It was not clear where Carter was drawing his estimates. Carter's comments follow his trip to the Middle East, where he met with members of Hamas, upsetting Israeli officials. Israel has maintained a policy of what it calls nuclear ambiguity, neither confirming nor denying whether it has a nuclear arsenal. But most experts believe the country has a cache of weapons. In 1986, technician Mordechai Vanunu disclosed details of Israel’s secret nuclear weapons program. The U.S has generally avoided Israel's nuclear issue, but Carter’s claim appears to be the first time a U.S. president has acknowledged an existing program. In 2006, U.S. Secretary of Defence Robert Gates, speaking to a Senate committee during his confirmation hearing, alluded to Israel's nuclear weapons capabilities. Speaking about Iran's motivation to acquire nuclear weapons, Gates said “they are surrounded by powers with nuclear weapons — Pakistan to their east, the Russians to the north, the Israelis to the west and us in the Persian Gulf.” A week later, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert sparked calls for his resignation when he said : "Iran openly, explicitly and publicly threatens to wipe Israel off the map. Can you say that this is the same level, when they are aspiring to have nuclear weapons, as France, America, Russia and Israel?" A spokesperson for his office later denied that his comment was an admission of a nuclear weapons program. How dare Israel be allowed to hide their hands of weapons and if one Muslim country dare own a firecracker, Israel and the Israel arse kissers the USA demand that that firecracker be destroyed and both country would go after that Muslim with weaponry of mass destruction if their demand is not adhered to... Where is the equality in this matter? How can the Muslim world protect itself from the likes of Israel and the US when they are out numbered in terms of weaponry? Is there no wonder there is so many members in the Muslim community filled with hatred towards Israel and the USA? I personally am not surprised of the level of hatred. There will never be peace in the middle east beacause... Jimmy Carter has exposed once again the lies of not only Israel, however, the US Government. Who cares, let both the Jews and Muslims kill each other, its not our problem. Oh get a grip, the Jews are God's chosen people, you better recognize.
