than the generation of 1968?

The media portrays today's youth as unconscious, unaware, and apathetic while the generation of 1968 (I assume these would be the baby boomers, back when they were young) is represented in an almost mythical sense as living in the throes of emancipation and sexual liberation, believing the world belonged to them and that it was theirs to change. They were, in my opinion, were rebelling against a culture of authoritarianism, demanding the right to self-expression.

The current generation, I think, is more focused on having social and ecological responsibilities toward the world and future generations. Not all embrace it, some choose cynicism and apathy or follow social convention.

But in my country 10 times more people have protested the war in Iraq than the war in Vietnam (we weren't party to either of them). Granted, these protests were not the monopoly of youth, but youth was a sizable component.

George Orwell asked in 1943 "Shall people … be allowed to live the decent, fully human life which is now technically achievable, or ... not?"

The greater part of my generation is saying: "Yes, they shall." We want people to live fully human lives when we take to the streets against globalization and we want people to live fully human lives when we protest against the ecological destruction of the planet.

Note: from a web article by CHARLOTTE-ANNE MALISCHEWSKI

Youth in 1968 was more engaged
Today's youth is more engaged
Youth will be youth in every age, some engaged, some not.

Voted : Today's youth is more engaged
Actually, I believe that the kids of today are more aware of things than I was because of the following...

1) When I was a kid we only had twelve channels on TV. There was no internet, no video games, we just went outside to play. With the kids on your block on the next one over. You came home when the street lights came on.

2) Kids today, they have access to the internet which has everything you wanted to know (but were afraid to ask).

3) They most likely have been in some sort of day care when they were younger, so they had to interact with other kids, and some figure of authority telling them what to do.

4) TV coverage, cable, and current events are more covered today than it was when I was young.

Seriously, most of the younger people I see these days are more concerned with the angle of their baseball cap than current events. I really should stop going to malls.
