With gas prices as high as they are, I'm a bit perplexed about why so many people still think that they need one so badly.

I also haven't the slightest idea why people think that they're safer. They necessarily brake and handle much worse than cars.

They're trendy and cool
I thought I was going to go off-roading someday (but that day never came and probably never will)
I really do need all that space
I honestly have no idea
Good for transporting people, dogs, equipment, etc. for outdoor trips
Work / necessity
they are safer
a suv is better than 6 cars.

COMMENTS:
We had one a few years ago because it was more practical (and necessary at times) where we live and work.

Since his business has grown, we've gotten a 4-wheel drive pickup to replace it with because it can haul more, and got a car for trips that aren't work or farm related.

when some drunken moron is bearing down on you with his 5 ton truck, you don't want to be in a prius.

it's a question of Inertia. I want a center mass big enough to fend off major organ damage. If they make it safer on the highway (enforce severe jailtime for drunk drivers, speed limit for trucks and SUV's, etc) I would be more than glad to go back to driving a gas sipping ultrasubcompact.

but for now, My survival instinct tells me to drive at least a full size sedan.
