KIDS, WHAT DO THEY APPRECIATE ?

Since my brother and his wife divorced, my nephew’s family on his mothers side to me are trying to buy his love.

They are more financially able than my family, always buying him expensive gifts, he is six and they bought him a better lap top than I have, during Spring vacation they took him to Disney World, they are now talking about a trip to Hawaii.

I can't compete, I take him to play ground and local sporting events and movies, that's about all I can afford, I buy him gifts but nothing compared to what they get him.

Do you think because they do all these extravagant things, my nephew will think they love him more,
How do kids translate such goings on?

I'll tell you below

He doesn't care who loves him more. At his age he'll care more about what he can get away with, what he recieves etc. As long as he's gettin' love off both paties that is.

My advice is to take him out to fun places, make him laugh, make him enjoy your company more than anyone elses. That's better than all the boring laptops in the world! ;o)

Growing up, my family didn't have a penny to spare, and one of my uncles had even less that, but he was my favourite family member from as far back as I remember.

He was a bit of an oddball, looneytunes, lol, but he was always himself, what you saw was what you got. From being a kid he treated me as a person with an opinion, made me laugh and looked out for me. Money or no money I loved that guy. I think he's where I got my sense of humour from, lol, nuff said.

I can't top the advice of the Wise British Gent. One day, he'll be past those gifts, but he'll always have the memories of how much his uncle gave him in time and love.

In my experience, I always liked the people best that spent time with me and seemed to enjoy it, that played with me as if they were my age, that spoke to us as if I was human. I had a young uncle that always listened to me and played with me, and while he rarely bought me gifts, he always sent me e-mail notes or postcards, or gave me his old stuff that he knew I liked. He gave me his old skateboard when I was 8, and I was more thrilled than if he had bought me a new one - not that I was any more than mediocre as a skateboarder. My best friend when I was a kid had an older cousin who was the same - we didn't see her often, but she always treated us as equals, saved make-up samples and hand-me down clothes to give to us and took us out for ice cream. We thought she walked on water.
