If it weren't for a lawyer, I wouldn't be typing this. I'm not mad at you for telling the joke. Not the first time I've heard it by a longshot. I've expressd the same displeasure at each retelling.

Not offensive because...
I had a terrible lawyer that cost me $34,500. When just out of my teens, I was erroneously apprehended for shoplifting (which I didn't do) and treated very badly, threatened and frightened by store personnel.
I went to an attorney who told me to settle because the attorney retained by this store would take men off the street who would swear they had sex with me. I settled for $500.00.
The attorney then told the parents of a friend of mine that I told him I WAS A PROSTITUTE!!!
I never told this lawyer any such thing.
A short time later, man was falsely accused of shoplifting at the same store and he sued and got $35,000. The monetary difference between what he got and what I got was $34,500. The psychological difference, however, was incalculable.
Not really offensive, but I have the same feelings as Truth. I've been helped tremendously by a lawyer a time or two. A good friend of mine was even helped by a family friend (who's a lawyer) who helped her out in a custody battle pro-bono.
