WHY DO SO MANY AMERICANS GO ABROAD TO ADOPT?

I've noticed that many Americans go abroad to adopt kids, especially in SE Asia for some reason. There are many kids here in this country that need a good home, yet so many foreign kids are adopted. Is this based on personal preference or is it something else?

personal preference
The laws governing such are easier
Foreign children make better slaves
Adoption Procedures in USA is hard.

COMMENTS:
Probably because of the red tape and the time it takes to adopt one in the US. It's actually easier to buy, I mean adopt one from another country.

And they aren't as time-consuming.

No, Grumpy, you had it right the first time.

It's the American way.

Take care of everybody but your own.

Yeah, that's what I figured, Truth. The families are told the money goes to this fee or that leg work, but for all practical purposes, it's legalized child trading. Especially when the parents get a cut of it behind the scenes after the adoptive parents go back home.

Beelz, it's the cute puppy syndrome. Most who are seeking to adopt want a cute little baby, not a 5 year old with discipline problems and health conditions relating to alcoholism or drug addiction. So they go to Asia where they can pretty much just pick a child out of a room full.

there should be a law preventing people from "donating" money to "orphanages" when they adopt.

I am planning to adopt some children soon, and I will not line the pockets of the child traders. I will go to a country/state where there isn't a established system of corruption.

That pretty much rules out china.

Bribes are just a way of life in many countries, LCD. You'd need to slip the right parties their "baksheesh" if you were getting a building permit, or wanting to open a factory, or needing to expedite import or export of goods...or adopting a child in those countries. There's nothing all that shocking about the practice, in proper context. There's nothing you personally are going to do to end what may be centuries of corrupt practices.

...And, so either you can play at paladin and stand on your principles, or you can give a child, often in dire circumstances, a better home. Really, the poverty that exists in the U.S., even in the worst corners, is NOTHING compared to the Third World, so why not follow the path of least resistance?
