Voted : Only if they are trying to kill you.
If the clerk's the typical meth addict they hire for Quickie Mart work in the dead of night, the crazed loon might come after me with a butcher knife if I ask him if they carry the WALL STREET JOURNAL and he takes it the wrong way.
Voted : I'll give my reason below.
You are being waited on outdoors by a deaf store clerk selling t-shirts for a store at an air show. One of the small planes has lost power and is heading for the crowd. Everyone has hit the deck. You motion to the clerk to turn qaround. He does not understand you. You knock him down and the plane passes only inches above him and the crowd. This is when it is ok to hit a store clerk.

This would be the *only* reason.
Voted : No, it is never okay
When a store clerk is rude, or otherwise incompetent... I use the power of the Internet. All stores have websites, which intern have e-mail comments that they take in. You send them a respectfully written complaint about one of there employees, It does get noticed. I did this about a convenient store clerk where I stop in the morning for gas, coffee, and or a doughnut (or two). This employee twice refused to get more half and half when I told him the container was empty. He told me to use the milk. That he did not have time to go get another container. (What?) Another time, he added his comments to two guys ahead of me in line, they were talking about his teenage daughter going on birth control. The store clerk over this and interrupted them saying that if a girl is old enough to bleed, there old enough to butcher. (What?) I thought the guy was gonna jump over the counter and knock him out. But the last straw for me was when he rang up the wrong cup size of my coffee, (I normally have a re-fill cup I use. This time I did not). He charged me a lower price (which I did not realize, I gave him a five, he gave me my change, and as I was walking out the store, he yelled at me like I stole something and said I rang up the wrong price I gonna charge you more the next time I come in. (What?) I went to the company website and sent an e-mail about the above. He is no longer at this store. I don't know if he was fired or not. I think they moved him to another store in the area. One with a little more supervision.
