The straight-aways out west are a lot different from the pot-hole ridden bends and steep grades up in the hills where I live.

Bad idea... watch the cash strapped local yokels pass out speeding tickets...

Safety and fuel-consumption issues aside, I'm against it because I'd never be able to stick to it.
Against. I think it would work in the East, but not out here in the West.

Against. States need to be free to set their own for the reason that Beelz stated. In some places, 55 might be a good speed. But there's also places where you can drive on a straight-away through prarie for two hours without meeting a single car. My dad got stopped several years ago in West Texas while we were on vacation. The limit was 55 then and the state trooper caught him going over 80. Dad was honest and told him he was just trying to make time on the family vacation. The trooper understood and let him go with a warning. I imagine the trooper, as anyone else who lived or traveled out there, was probably guilty of doing the same a time or two. As for the cars, many newer cars have a 'sweet speed' at around 65mph in their highest gear.
55 is far too slow. It's 70 here in Blighty, and that even feels too slow sometimes.

If people think speed limits are unreasonably low, they will simply drive faster just to be defiant. In Ohio, people drove about 4 MPH faster on average when the speed limit was 55 than when it was raised to 65 (According to data I found we were 70 MPH and 60 at night before the national went into effect).
