ASIAN NAMES : SHOULD THEY TRANSLATE THE MEANING?

asian immigrants usually have phonetically translated names in english.

usually, it's not even a good phonetic translation.

almost always, those names mean something: why not translate the meaning of the names, instead of funny sounding names that doesn't mean anything in english, or even worse adopt some christian names picked out of a hat?

what do you think of the idea?

Voted : great idea
That would work for the engrish speaking people.
But what if the translation is more of a phrase than a single word.

They need to do it like a lot of other cultures did. In Spanish, Jose becomes Joe. And the Swedish Johan becomes John.

It was sort of made fun of in the movie with Jakie Chan and Owen Wilson...
Jakie's character was Chon Wan and Owens character called him John Wayne.

No other cultures are required to do it.

Sometimes I wish I had my original Polish family name that was 10 letters long.

The shortened version easily passes for Chinese.
