The annoucement has thrown Israel into political turmoil and has raised serious doubts about any real prospects for a peace accord with the Palestinians, Syria and the Middle East in general. Olmert stated that he would not be running in his party's primary election come September and that he would step down afterward, so as to enable his successor to form a government.
