IS SPACE EXPLORATION A WASTE OF MONEY?

[+] serious ballot by Grapost

What does spending 100 Million Dollars to find out if Mars has water, do for any of us here on Earth?

So we discover another planet. So we find out some moon has volcanic activity. So we find out what comets are made of.

How does that information benefit us in any plausible way? It isn't gonna solve any of the problems we have here on Earth, but all the money spent to find it out would do a lot of good.

Actually I love space exploration, but at times I think the money would be better spent taking care of our IMMEDIATE needs.

We did it! We found water on Mars!

In your face, USSR! (Juan McCain probably thinks that country is still on the map too.)

Almost clicked wrong there...

If we really have to sate that collective jones to explore, then there's about 70% of the planet we know little or nothing about.

we knew there was water there from the 1980's viking landers.

sure we didn't see a close up of an ice field, but was that photo shoot alone really worth 300 million dollars?

they could have sent up several martian landers with better battery life and wheels, and do some exploration. I thought the recent lander was really a huge waste of money.

Well seeing as our solar system has a finite lifetime, if we are to survive as a civilization, we must find habitable areas else where in the universe to one day survive.

Setting up colonies in space maybe a solution to the looming threat of overpopulation as well.

But yes, spending 100 mil on a quest to find water on mars is more than a little excessive.
