Ask to dude if he will pay for the repair. If he says no. Then ask for at least half. He still refuses. Take him to one of those TV judge shows and get your money back.

And of course, Never lend him anything again.

I dunno. If it was a friend and he wasn't abusing it, and it just died naturally in the middle of cutting the lawn I'd say he was probable right. It would have most likely died the next time I used it. Nope, I wouldn't expect him to pay for the repair.

Everybody would be lending out all their old shite and hoping for a breakdown if that was the unwritten rule.

On the other hand it depends on how many times he'd borrowed it. If he was a bum who was too tight to get his own and used mine all the time, then maybe at least half, or if he borrowed it and had it for months etc. But I wouldn't know, I wouldn't be friends with a sponge like that. :o)
