Living in the Country which considers itself to be the "Leader" of the "free" World, we have to ask ourselves has the "elected" Officials left the World better off than it was before they took the helm... while noting many things are out of our direct or indirect control, policies undertaken and promoted by the U.S. have many desirable and undesirable effects on the entire World and the ramifications rightfully or wrongly will be blamed in part on our role in the process...
By and large:
The World is better off
The World is not better off
The World is about the same
We are on the eve of destruction
The world is in worse shape but it's not our fault
The world is in worse shape and it is our fault
The World is in better shape thanks to the U.S.
The World is in worse shape due to the terrorists

I think the World is a far more dangerous place, and I believe the fault may be in our taking our eye off of the more serious threats and squandering life, money, and time on not ready for prime time wannabes which only served to allow true adversaries to build up and prepare... and many policies which steps on the toes of those who can wage a war beyond brainwashed individuals willing to blow themselves up in a marketplace or, if "allowed", crash airplanes into buildings. Then, there's financial strife which may be in some ways connected to past and current interglobal relationships which were unforseen, ignored, or overlooked...

Turning Al Quaeda from a small bunch of religious nuts into a world force by invading the Muslim world wasn't the greatest decision in history. IMHO.

In some areas, in others it's better, but over all I'd say the world is worse off. However, sometimes things have to get worse to get better.
