I ABSOLUTELY DEPLORE DEFEATISM

[+] serious ballot by JimmyJams
ACTIVE Sun Aug 24, 08 - Fri Feb 20, 09

Pardon my bluntness, but I truly detest defeatism. The Beijing Olympics were fantastic. Despite a number of controversies and questionable actions and tactics by China, the games were brilliant. That is owed in part to their efforts, but more to the fabulous athletes. But, truth be told, the games were brilliant. But, so were the Athens games.

But really, what is simply unacceptable to me is the defeatist attitude of some Brits. One example is this quote from BBC.

"It encapsulated what many British observers here have felt throughout these Games: we're all pretty blown away by the show the Chinese have put on, and we certainly can't afford anything as fancy as this, but we'll muddle through in 2012, and we'll try to put a smile on your face while we do it."

Bollocks! What kind of talk is that? Is GB so intimidated that collectively it's been decided we cannot do as good a job as China?

I find those words to be totally and utterly defeatist and unfortunately, other Brits are echoing those words. Why? We're a rich and powerful nation with an impressive history and surely, we can do as well, if not better! Say what you want about the Yanks, but at least they would be pumping themselves up and taking the challenge head on. I dare say so would the Germans, or the Russians.

Are some in GB being defeatist?

If GB tries to emulate the Chinese, it will end up bankrupting itself, Canadians were paying off the 1976 games for almost two decades after the fact.

A more British games, would be much like our character, unassuming, sporting and an emphasis on fair play.

I admit that I didn't watch more than four seconds of these Games at any one time (beauty of the boycott at work), but I frankly didn't hear about *anything* that made these Olympics stellar in any way, save for the individual performances of Phelps and Bolt, and it's been placed in a shadow by the allegations against the Chinese. London, you're a beautiful city. Just throw your souls into your Games, and I think the world will love you as much as I did the first time I stood before Nelson's Column.

What is this we remember the lessons of Montreal? Totally irrelevant. The London games are 4 years away. There is absolutely no reason to speak such weak words publicly when the Beijing games are just ending. I mean it didn't bankrupt China, now did it? Did it bankrupt Greece? No mate it didn't. And the UK can certainly afford more. You're as bad as the defeatists Steelhamster If we can't do it right, we shouldn't have been chosen as the host nation in my opinion.
by JimmyJams on Sun Aug 24, 08 4:50pm [+]

Whats the point in spending billions trying to outdo Beijing? London will host a good games, but it doesn't have to throw bucket loads of money to achieve it.

China managed it because they have a huge pool of cheap labour.

Now stop being a crass twit, and go read your Daily Mail

England may not have as much to spend as the Chinese government because England wont be stealing money from its citizens by shutting industry down and other wrongful things. England does not see its citizens as so much expendable garbage used to make their celebrations appear falsely "grand". China is a spiritually ugly country that made itself look like a gigantic asshole with cheap tricks for all the world to laugh at.

England, you have NOTHNING to be ashamed at. China spent blood money on their olympics. I say olympics with a small "o" because China has tarnished it. For the Olympics in 2012, I use a capital "O".

Don't adopt a defeatist attitude. You are a far better nation than China will ever be. A defeatist attitude is just the kind of negative self abuse China wants every other nation to adopt. DON'T DO IT.
by forgetmenot on Sun Aug 24, 08 5:56pm [+]

Economic extravagance is not necessarily synonymous with holding a successful Olympics. The reason London was chosen to host the 2012 Olympics in the first place was because its bid focused more on the lasting effects holding the Games would have on the city, principally the regeneration of the East End and the creation of thousands of new jobs in a poverty stricken area. I’m confident that London will succeed in holding a fantastic Olympic Games in 2012. The IOC chose London because it wasn’t trying to emulate past Games, but because it’s attempting to revolutionise the way the Olympics are held.

Pardon, but you are calling me a crass twit? I've taken the time to read some of your comments Steelhamster and I believe you're the crass twit. Someone does not agree with you and they are a crass twit? It's absolutely abundantly clear that you are a very negative person and a very egotistical one at that. A dangerous combination. Stop spreading your vitriol and negativity. Rude bugger.
by JimmyJams on Sun Aug 24, 08 9:06pm [+]

Winston you make an excellent and polite point. I agree. What galls me is the fact that the Beijing games were not even over when these twatters were speaking as if London could never do as good a job as was done in Beijing. There's being rational and humble and then there's being a defeatist. Why set the tone that we can't compete on the same level?

If memory serves, they put on a jolly good show at the millenium celebration.

I think this is partly typical British self-effacement coming through. I'm sure their Olympics will be spectacular when the time comes.

I caught footage of the hand-off ceremony from the closing this morn, and it left me not wanting. A double-decker bus, Jimmy Page, Leona Lewis and Becks Himself. I may be in touch with my friend Taryn, to see if I can bum the use of the house she still has there in a few years.

Yuck. That is kind of sad. When did he games start being all about the opening and closing ceremony? So long as a good showing of nations is there to compete, it's going to be a good show, and nobody is going to complain that it didn't live up to Beijing.

Typical of certain posters, who attack your point, then get mock offended when you reply in kind.

Time for grown ups to talk mate? Well I guess that excludes you. Tough dose of reality for you. You're nasty and hostile and negative and obviously, a miserable human being. Take your nastiness and downer self some place else. I note with glee you keep coming back. That is also typical of people like you. Move along, since I can't be arsed associating with such a downer. Miserable fool.

Maybe if the British government took away the rest of our freedoms, and our right to vote, then became a country filled with factories that knocked out cheap crap for no money to sell back in the first world for a massive profit we'd be able to afford to put on a great show just like the happy and willing Chinese slaves did.
And who cares about a poxy opening ceremony apart from shallow imbeciles anyway?

Here's my idea for an opening ceremony:

The Queen: "I declare these London Olympics open. Good luck everyone."

The End

Sounds like a plan, except the queen bit..... not a monarchist, but I take your point
