RELIGIOUS PEOPLE: WELCOME TO THE 21ST CENTURY

[+] serious ballot by Steelhamster
ACTIVE Thu Sep 04, 08 - Fri Sep 04, 09

How, in this age of science and ever increasing knowledge, people still cling to ancient superstitions, even in the face of ever increasing evidence, baffles me.

I know the god squad will use the word 'faith' to justify their belief, but is it not time to drag ourselves out of the middle ages and come into the 21st century.

Or they will say 'prove' god doesn't exist, I don't believe in unicorns or pixies either, would they expect me to prove that too.

Sorry for the rant, but I am becoming increasingly worried at the amount of power these religions are having over our lives, whether you believe or don't

Despite your words, I still believe
I agree with your point of view
Huh?

COMMENTS:
I doubt very much you are sorry for the rant.
Despite what you happen to think people who believe in God and belong to a religion do so because they think it is reasonable. Not because they want to live in the Dark Ages or start all the wars ever.

Power only comes from one place, Steelhamster, and it uses religions as it uses all other organisations on this planet.

Try letting go of your bafflement, and let people get on with their lives rather than insulting them by saying they live in the Dark Ages or by comparing a pixie with the creator of the universe.

I doubt religion really has any power over your life at all. Why not trust other people's good sense to make the same choice on their own? Just a suggestion.

Religion is part of their culture. That's hard for most to let go of, be it a well known god of the Middle East or some obscure god from the South Pacific. Where these people were born plays a huge part of which god they're going to believe but you'll never get them to see that.

"Where these people were born plays a huge part of which god they're going to believe but you'll never get them to see that."
ClosetIgunana

And why would anyone waste their time trying to make them?
by Grimblecrumble on Thu Sep 04, 08 8:07am [+]

Who said anything about "making them"? Free thought is a beautiful thing if people allows themselves the luxury.
by ClosetIguana on Thu Sep 04, 08 8:23am [+]

So should everyone agree with your opinions?
by skylab on Thu Sep 04, 08 9:26am [+]

They don't have to believe that free thought is a beautiful thing but they should at least consider it.
by ClosetIguana on Thu Sep 04, 08 10:01am [+]

So called Creators come and go, Zeus. Odin and Ra were the pre-eminent gods of their time, now its been replaced with Jesus, Allah and Buddha.

Power does come from only one place, the imaginations of Man, religion is a man made structure, concocted by the powers that be to exert control over the human race.

Until we break these shackles, we will always be at the mercy of the irrational

"..people who believe in God and belong to a religion do so because they think it is reasonable."
by Grimblecrumble

Agreed. People base their beliefs and practices on personal perceptions and experience.

We might not believe that a god is real; but to a person who's beliefs have helped them in one way or the other, that god is very real to them.

Most of us are hardwired by nature to continue doing what is working and to not continue doing what does not work. It's a survival instinct that is very understandable and can be applied to belief. If it works and it betters one's life, why change?
by Grumpy_Person on Thu Sep 04, 08 1:05pm [+]

^makes some good points.
by ClosetIguana on Thu Sep 04, 08 1:58pm [+]

Why circumscribe the topic of dangerous stupidity to religion??I thought stupidity was generic.

Hey Steely, just remember..it's not communism that's dangerous or stupid but the communists themselves that are.Just look at their legacy,at over 100 million dead victims and counting...that is the godless collectivist idealogies.

Cheers!

by robotthinker on Thu Sep 04, 08 6:01pm [+]

Good points all. But I disagree that Communism itself isn't stupid. It espouses equality while in actuality keeps everyone poor while a tiny elite are rich. Exactly what the elite the world over want to do to everyone. Only a fool would think it's a good idea.
by Grimblecrumble on Fri Sep 05, 08 2:24am [+]

Voted : I agree with your point of view
Steelhamster, where have you been?

People NEVER want to accept REALITY.

People can't handle the TRUTH!

That is why Politicians lie so much. If they don't they won't get elected.

Fiction Books outsell Non-Fiction by a 3 to 1 margin.

Reality is way to UNPLEASANT for most people, that is why they cling to these "Fantasy" stories and beliefs.

"But I disagree that Communism itself isn't stupid. It espouses equality while in actuality keeps everyone poor while a tiny elite are rich."

I don't like communism myself either..I don't endorse any idealogy except maybe libertarianism which I know won't work either unless the average person has a functional brain.

That brings me back to a critical point, idealogies aren't problems but rather that most people are dullards. We need different idealogies to suit the different needs but anybody who advocates forcing their idealogy, like communists do,onto others is THE problem.

I'm sure the misery index correlates positively with intelligence.

Neuter the stupid.
