COMMENTS:
I would feel sorry for anyone killed or injured but those people also put others in danger by staying and if rescue is necessary
Voted : Yes
Some people just can't afford to evacuate. If I were in their positions, I don't think I could.

It's a no brainer, leave or die, I know it's hard but there's really no choice... in an emergency, you will be able to find (free) shelter for a few days and if your place is badly damaged or destroyed, it would have happened anyway... there should be a fine or charge for rescuing some of them depending on circumstances...
^ I think there are two categories, those who choose and those who can't afford. Few years ago when hurricane was heading for Va. I had family members who decided to take the chance and stay even though they could afford to leave, many others did the same. Fortunately that storm was not as bad as predicted.
^ that was for truth, but I guess could apply in part to your comment as well :)
Voted : Not sure
I don't think it was as bad as it seemed. At least further up off the coast. I was in a Category 4 hurricane before Katrina hit. The damage was much worse than what I've seen on the networks with their 24/7 coverage on Ike. There was almost a foot of water covering the ground, downed trees, power lines and so on, but it received little media attention. I guess that all changed after Katrina.
The problem is it's better to be safe than sorry, and when people stay and it's "not that bad", the next time they are far more likely to do it again... you only have to go though a bad one once to open your eyes...

if they stayed behind by CHOICE.
^^ I agree, I would leave if hurricane headed my way
When the hurricane first entered the Gulf of Mexico, they thought it was going to hit near Corpus Christi, so my daughter, who attends college there, evacuated Wednesday evening. She didn't want to get caught up in the traffic jam at the last minute. I'm glad the hurricane took a different direction, otherwise there might be a knock on my door with my kid saying "mommy, I need a place to live."

They may have used poor judgment but they are still living beings.
