United States Mint Director Ed Moy and the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission will hold a news conference at the Lincoln Memorial on Monday, September 22 to unveil the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent designs, the first time the image on the penny has changed in half a century. In 2009, the United States Mint will put into circulation a series of four different one cent coins in recognition of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent. While the obverse (heads side) will continue to bear the likeness of President Lincoln currently on the penny, the reverse (tails side) will change to bear four different designs, each representing a different phase in the life of Abraham Lincoln. The aspects of his life to be honored will be Lincoln's birth in Kentucky, his formative years in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois and his Presidency in Washington, D.C. The penny shown here depicts Lincoln reading up on log splitting techniques before he gets to work I can't wait to get all four of them. More waste.
