COULD YOU WORK AS A TRANSMISSION LINE REPAIRMAN?

[+] serious ballot by wildcard
ACTIVE Thu Dec 04, 08 - Fri Dec 04, 09

I personally couldn't do this work - scaling the high wires doing live repairs.

First off I'm afraid of heights and secondly of being horrifically burned or killed due to a single momentary lapse of concentration.

Have to appreciate the guys that do it though. I read they are well compensated for the high level of risk they expose themselves too...

Yes I could this job
No couldn't do it
I work(ed) as a lineman

I couldn't do it. They're not just doing what you described, but some times doing it at night and in bad weather.

I saw on a History Channel Modern Marvels how they tend to these lines.

They attach a plank to the side of helicopter. A man sits at the end of the plank while the helicopter flies him to spots that need maintenance.

The man then unteathers himself, and jumps onto the wires to repair them, and jumps back on the plank when he's done! Making sure he is grounded all the time.

SUPRISE! There has never been a FEMALE lines(man) in ever!

As usual. They like electricity but accept none of the risks involved in providing it!

^Grapost, you haven't traveled much, have you? In every state I've ever lived in (nine at last count), there have been female linespeople.
by Truthseeker013 on Fri Dec 05, 08 12:18pm [+]

^ THose states being Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, California, Virginia, North Carolina and Jawja. (Sorry, that's only eight states. I lived in D.C. for a few months, and erroneously counted it as a state.)

They are linesmen ON THE GROUND with their computers and meters.

They never go up on the towers to repair the lines!

The Tools are too heavy and they keep dropping them. The Helicopter would spend more time landing to pick up the tools than flying!

by Grapost on Fri Dec 05, 08 2:03pm [+]

^ Yes, they do. I even recall a humorous moment in which a female lineperson taunted a male co-worker whjo was afraid to go up in a cherry-picker.
by Truthseeker013 on Fri Dec 05, 08 2:11pm [+]

Another Sexist Double-Standard, that woman should have been fired for that.

Men taunting Females on the job for they're lack of ability to their job, is grounds for dismissal at a lot of companies!

He should have reported her to his boss and filed a lawsuit for them allowing a hostile work environment for men to exist there!

A woman would have been applauded for doing the same thing. When A man does it he's called a wuss!

I still don't believe you claims of women working on the tranmission lines. Please direct me to some photos as proof.

Your claims are similar to the propaganda the Feminsts put out.

All I could find. I think she is actually working on phone lines in this image.

PS -Here's a pic of the woman who scorned Grapost way back in 1957.

He's been bitter ever since.

Wildcard: I think you got confused between telephone lines and HIGH POWER ELECTRICAL transmision lines.

One is highly deadly, the other will give you jolt but won't kill you. And one is tens times higher off the gound than the other.

I've worked in the power industry for 25 years. I've known 1 or 2 female linemen, but they worked underground lines. I suppose there might be overhead female lineman out there but i don't know any.
A lot of the transmission work is done from the towers and they have to be climbed - not sure how much is actually done from helicopters though i have seen films of it. A lot of patrol work is done from a helicopter (a lot on foot too).
I've heard stories of lineman sticking their tongue on a hot transmission line - but they are isolated from ground and therefore at the same potential (same reason birds can sit on the lines). Still freaks me out.

Distribution linemen often work the lines hot as well - covered in rubber and well insulated. They've all got some stories to tell though, and safety is a BIG issue. Most accidents are the result of failure to follow safety guidelines - folks do this work every day and sometimes become complacent. But a shortcut can cost your life (or someone else's life), so the use of Personal Protective Equipment and strict adherance to safety rules is constantly emphasized.

I know a lot of people who do this kind of work and in addition to being risky, it's often hard physical labor - wears the body out pretty well by the time they retire. I wouldn't want to do it.

Scorned by the 50ft woman! She terrorized you didn't she Grapost? j/k

I can't find any pictures specifically of women linespeople working on the high wires. Does not mean there aren't any though.

For the record, I couldn't find any real decent pics of MEN working on the transmission towers either.

If you are so concerned about it go contact one of the Lines Companies and get them to send you some pics of their female workers. MAG_rofl

i've got several good pics of lineMEN on the towers, but i'm not at liberty to post them on the net. I'll have to ask around now if we have any women working in transmission (on the lines that is)
