WOULD YOU FEEL HAPPY HAVING A 747 JUMBO JET FLYING 30FT ABOVE YOUR HEAD???

[+] serious ballot by wildcard
ACTIVE Sun Dec 14, 08 - Mon Dec 14, 09

Well you would think this photo is a certain fake to look at it, but this is for REAL!

It was captured at Maho Beach, St. Maarten in the Dutch West Indies. This is an older photo, however they apparently still have a weekly 747 jet landing there, as well as numerous other huge Boeing & Airbus aircraft regularly.

Would you feel quite safe and happy standing on that beach?

Yes, quite happy
No, that's completely insane!

I think it's kinda cool. I would not be scared. Look at all the people on the beach taking photos, just like the one who took this one. I would be one of them taking photos, too!

Wait a minute. Are you sure this wasn't photoshopped? Where is the plane's shadow on the beach? The shadow should be quite visible. Plus the shadows of the wings are only faintly visible on the fuselage. On the beach, it's a sunny day. On the plane, it's a an overcast day.

It's like that in Austin, Texas. You're driving down the freeway and suddenly a plane appears right above, like it's going to land on you. The airport is right beside the freeway. It totally freaked me out the first time I saw that.

I've had an F-14 buzz me at about the same altitude, pulling almost Mach One.

forgetmenot, looking at the direction of the shadows on the ground I would only guess the shadow is being cast in front of the plane out of view.

I had great difficulty believing this was the real deal myself, but after watching further video clips of people being BLOWN off the beach into the water like paper dolls while these jets were taking off, it makes it pretty convincing.

It's photoshopped, although there are places in the world where planes have to land in pretty steep angle.

El Paso, Chicago, and landing approach at Las Vegas is pretty hairy.

clues to it being photoshopped, there are no exhaust, landing gear doesn't seem fully extended, plane should be angled up with full flap, and I don't see little children flung into the water by the jetwash :)
by LCD on Sun Dec 14, 08 9:20pm [+]

^well the jet blast is above their heads and the engines would be throttled right back for landing. And I don't see any little children in the photo lol. I admit I didn't notice the landing gear.

The point is, 747's and other large jets DO indeed fly right over that beach on their final approach to Princess Juliana Intl. in St Maarten. Look it up for yourself if you don't believe me. I certainly wouldn't want to be standing there that close!

It is during the planes takeoffs that people were blown away by the jet wash. The runway is just over to the right of the boundary fence. There are big signs up to warn people about it however most don't seem to care until they end up blown halfway out to sea...

^ I have to agree. It's not saying that planes don't land there, but that's not an actual picture of one doing so. The reported heighth above ground, the length of the plane, and the camera angles of the people taking the pictures don't match up. Plus the shadows on the plane don't match with the shadows of the people on the ground.

It wouldn't bother me though.
by Grumpy_Person on Sun Dec 14, 08 10:12pm [+]

Agree with LCD that is.
by Grumpy_Person on Sun Dec 14, 08 10:13pm [+]

oh I don't doubt it.

also if you look at the size of the plane, in order for the scale to work right the plane would be flying near those buildings not over those people.

look at the windows on that double decker.

true you throttle back when landing, but right before the landing, you flare using full flaps and throttle, you would get good whips of air. specially for a jumbo planes.
by LCD on Sun Dec 14, 08 10:57pm [+]

Why would someone waste their time photoshopping something that actually happens every day? The photogaraph is real. The internet is littered with them.

Some people think that because their brain can't understand something then it's got to be false. Sheesh, don't you just hate armchair experts?
by britvic55 on Mon Dec 15, 08 12:48am [+]

Another case of where 2 and 2 equal 5. Happens a lot round here.
by britvic55 on Mon Dec 15, 08 12:49am [+]

I suppose this is shopped too. No shadows, No exhaust, same landing gear etc etc.

Let me know if anyone needs more proof that they are so wrong. Again. :o)

Ah, I stand corrected. Thanks for the extra pics, Britvic. It's easier to judge when you have more than one to go on.
by Grumpy_Person on Mon Dec 15, 08 9:19am [+]

britvic loves being right.

I stand corrected. that's a nice photo, the pilot is really low on approach then, and that's some clear atomsphere, because that plane looks to be right above those people, when they are actually hundreds of feet away.
by LCD on Mon Dec 15, 08 10:25am [+]

hehe, I am just taking the piss on you mate, so relax :)

If I didn't see all these other pictures I too would have thought it was photoshopped.
by ClosetIguana on Mon Dec 15, 08 1:07pm [+]

Brit, thanks for posting more pics, I didn't have enough time before.

LCD, I thought you were a bus driver? It's not a flying bus is it? Made by DeLorean? wink

I thought 30ft was quite generous from some of the videos I've seen. Reason the 747's and others have to come in so low is because the runway there is only 8,000ft long. I've seen a clip of 747 from the pilots perspective in the cockpit and he had to use the entire length of the runway to stop the plane with full reverse thrust.

The point I was trying to make with this ballot was not whether some photos were real or not, but to highlight the total disregard for public safety in some countries as well as peoples' lack of concern for their own safety and well being.
by wildcard on Mon Dec 15, 08 1:17pm [+]

I know it's tough to believe, I refused to believe it myself, until I saw all the evidence. It's crazy.
by wildcard on Mon Dec 15, 08 1:20pm [+]

^yikes.

in the states, there are places where local laws prevent the planes from flying above residential areas unless they are at a certain altitude.

as a result, pilots are forced to bring them down at 30 degrees and literally plunge into the airfield, and put them down almost taking out those landing gears. Combine that with some high altitude airports (less room for error because of thin air) and I have literally prayed for my life on some landings :)
by LCD on Mon Dec 15, 08 1:38pm [+]

'there nobody more dangerous than a fool who is sometimes right. :)'

There's nobody more dangerous than a fool who is always wrong. :o) lol, back at yer, just pullin' your pisser :o)

The thing what got me was you said 'it is photoshopped', not in my opinion, or looks like it is. Based on technical knowledge and evidence of what it looks like on the surface, but you were wrong.

My point is, you are not always right, however much your mind convinces you you are and don't alway judge a book by its cover because sometimes 2 plus 2 looks to equal 5.

by britvic55 on Mon Dec 15, 08 5:54pm [+]

At some point, over the road, I'd say they were 30 feet or less from the ground. If you think Spleen's video is close watch this one.
