RESORT FEES, AKA ENERGY SURCHARGE

RESORT FEES, AKA ENERGY SURCHARGE

some hotels, especially in Nevada, Florida, and New York, includes a clause in their fine print when you sign up for hotel rooms.

They used to explain this away by saying it's to offset the high energy costs, now they conviently change it to say it's for room phones, workout rooms, pool towels, silly things like that they used to include with the hotel price anyways.

recently, I made the reservation at a resort at a steep discount ($150 room for $40) but was charged $37 at checkout.

they showed me the fine print when I signed in.

is this a ok practice, or a illegal business practice?

It's fine print.

yes, but when you book it, it mentions "resort fees" in tiny print somewhere if you are lucky, but it never says how much it is.

it's not like you can make alternate arrangements when you arrive and it is posted on your checkin papers.

If they mention it in the print and it has no amount mentioned ask what the amount or rate is. If it's not listed in the print and they don't inform you of it then yes it's wrong.

Also if asked they cannot give you a rate of some sorts then it's again wrong unless they state something like that it's up to them what the charge will be period.

Fine print is never ethical. Legal, but not honest. I couldn't add a legal but sneaky option.
