Voted : $251-$500
I suppose that would largely depend on what kind of pet. Adopt a puppy! Bag of food every few weeks and you're good to go.
Voted : IMO, no cost is too high
If the return is the unquestioned love and joy one would get from that pet. Everyone I know who has a pet of any kind would say this, were they here.
No cost is too much for my two girls. They're family.
Our vet has a kennel, where we leave our cat over the holidays. They have a form which asks (paraphrasing)"if your pet needs emergency care, what is the maximum you are willing to spend to keep your pet alive". You can't put a value on they joy your pet gives but I put $5000.00
Voted : $1000 and over.
This doesn't mean I would not pay it, though. To some, an animal may not enhance the whole world, but to the owner, it's a living being, a faithful companion and a stress reducer. I hear pets can help people out of depression and reach other disturbed people, so maybe a couple thousand might be LESS than the cost of depression doctors and medicines.
Voted : $2000 and over
It depends on the particular kind of pet. With a dog or cat, $1000 could easily cover the standard care (vaccinations, checkups, food, hygeine, etc...). Not counting illness or accidents, I think when someone spends over 2000 a year on a dog or cat, it's not so much for the pet, but for themselves.
^keeping the pet alive is a selfish act if it's over $2000.00? Odd.
...nevermind, I didn't read "Not counting illness or accidents"
Yeah, that's what I mean. Carrying Fifi twice a week to the groomers for a shampooing might make their owner happy because Fifi now smells like French Lavender. But I'm sure it pisses Fifi off to no end because, thanks to the twice-a-week baths, her skin is now dry and itchy as hell. There's a lot of little examples like that were people think they're doing good for their pets, but they're really not. Expensive canned food is another. Most of the brands are mostly water, is low in protein, and gives most dogs diarrhea. Some pet toys are the same. My sister's cat choked to death years ago after the fuzz on a toy he was chewing on got stuck in his windpipe. If mine wants a toy now, I stuff cat nip in a sock and tie a knot in the end. They love it just as much, if not more, than any cute little toy that I can buy.
