Voted : Andrew Vachss
He's a crusader for the rights of child-rape and -abuse victims. Upright man, takes no crap, sells none. He's also a great author, Number Two on my list after Zelazny. I recommend his stuff, but with a warning. It's NOT for the squeamish. No overt blood and guts, but his prose is very, VERY evocative. My first experience reading his work. "Batman: The Ultimate Evil", was the last time I vomited while not ill.

Identified a potential enemy and didn't back down when everyone ridiculed him. Inspired his nation and the world to stand up to tyrany.

Voted : I don't believe in hero worship.
Yes, there are people whom I admire for their personal character or morals, for their intellectual or literary talents, or for their contributions to society as a whole. However, I do not believe in hero worship or elevation of any person on a pedestal to the extent they become an icon. First of all, I don't think any human being deserves that treatment. Secondly, I think by doing so, a certain intellectual ossification sets in for the followers of this individual. They are now members of a cult of personality and honest critique of the failings of that person or their ideas is met with rants and ravings. So, give praise where praise is due, but the idea of a "hero" is a childish notion we should leave to small boys.
By the way, people who idolize that venal race of protean self-serving reptiles known as politicians are the most misguided souls on the entire planet--and rather dangerous in their obliviousness.
Oh, yeah, Andrew Vachss is one hell of a writer.
