LOSING MY RELIGION?

[+] serious ballot by RunsWithScissors
ACTIVE Wed May 20, 09 - Mon Feb 13, 12

Why is that the more people around me who start going to church, the more I pull away from it? It all starts innocently enough with them just going to church once a week, and then before you know it, they're going two or three times a week, having lunch with the pastor, etc. The next thing you know, I'm being asked why I don't go to church anymore.

I grew up going to church. Infact, there were times when we had religion crammed down our throats till I thought I was gonna puke. Don't get me wrong, I do believe in God and would never turn my back on him, but do I necessarily need to go to church to prove my faith?

You should go to church more
You can believe in God without going to church
A person can truly be spiritual "without" attending a house of worship
stop the fairy tales. think for yourself
Spirituality is not just about god
You can meeting with christians in small groups settings..it is more trendy now.

I can't reply to this fairly, having long schismed from Holy Mother Church.

During my childhood I believed in a god, defined myself as a protestant but rarely to church, I think I went all of two times in a span of 12 years, one of those was a wedding at the age of 5.

I lost my faith and belief in a higher power of any sort a long time ago, but I know others who grew up the same way I did with religion and still hold their beliefs, so it seems to me that a person can truly be spiritual without attending a house of worship.

there is huge chasm between god and church these days.

don't confuse church with god. they don't go together.

I was brought up in the Church also, and due to things that has happened in my life, My beliefs are unshakable when it comes to God, but I stopped attending mainly due to the hypocrites in the place... maybe there's a Church out there that is truly holy, but a true believer doesn't need to go there constantly like it's a AA meeting or something to have a relationship with the creator, and be subject to a guilt trip over giving money to the place...

Church is basically a place to meet some ppl or make friends with similar values but I dont know if it helps make a person more spiritual.

I don't think going to church is the same as being spiritual.

I like the song that says, " I don't believe that heaven waits for only those who congregate"

What LCD said.

Many churches these days are more akin to social clubs than places of worship, teaching, or praise.

I see a lot of replies here that detail what's wrong with organised religion.

But there is one thing that stands out.

This idea that you dont need to go to church to be spiritual.

Well heres a thought, maybe you don't need to believe in god to be spiritual either.

Reading these responses I get the strange feeling that most of you are heading in that direction. Just a tiny step of thought. Freeing you from guilt by association.

If you claim to be a christian then you will get labelled with the same brush.

Unless of course you decide to put a stop to it.

make a stand against what you think is wrong with the church instead of calling yourselves christians and then firmly burying your head in the sand.

Would christ have accepted this? I dont think he would. So why do christians??
