Voted : Those were the days.
Granted that due to safety standards and regulations, we're probably safer today than a hundred years ago. Or at least more protected. But I can't help but think of people like my grandmother who grew up and lived all her life in a lead-base painted house, fried almost everything she cooked, never used a pressure caner in her life when making preserves (a big no-no according to the FDA 'cause we'll all get food poisoning) and whose favorite meat was pork because she always claimed that she was allergic to beef. The woman didn't develop heart disease until after she was in her 90s and in a nursing home. Go figure.
^Interesting
We are not any safer now than we were then. The big difference is now we have absolutely no personal responsibility for our own actions, no one wants to step up and say "Hey, that was stupid that I picked up my lawnmower and tried to use it to trim my hedges and cut off my fingers" (TRUE STORY by the way) instead they sue Sears for not having any warning about NOT doing that, and they WIN. People are lazier and more ignorant than ever, therefore I'd say there were good old days and we are likely getting into some very dark days in the next 5 to 10 years.
Voted : Those were the days.
I remember a time where we didnt wear crash helmets on pushbikes. we would stay out all day in the sun. we would eat and drink whatever we wanted. there were no soft landings on the playgrounds and noone ever got taken to court over injuries we inflicted on ourselves. We used to swim in the tide in poluted water and never used breathing equipment or goggles We all survived.... Yes they were the good old days because we didn't even know we had freedom we just took it all for granted. Now kids cant step out the door without a myriad of fears that the state has put in place. Adults in fear of helping children out just in case they become accused of something instead. We cant smack our children and the children know this and act like morons and run riot. I'm not condoning smacking them but the threat was usually enough but you cant now because nanny state is watching you. What astounds me is that many people still think they have autonomous freedom. You don't, not even slightly. We are controlled these days to the point of not being able to speak our minds. Mistakes were made in the past but they still are now. but at least in the past you didnt feel like they knew about it and didnt care. The guy who invented chc's and introduced lead to petrol may well have gone down as a dangerous meddler but you get the feeling he did it with honest intent. Can anyone say that about enron? Or the many scientists who fake results just to keep their jobs. No things were much more open when i was a child now its all scare tactics and control. Now the police have the right to know who you are and what your doing yet the streets aren;t safer they are more dangerous. how is that possible? If a policeman knew where yopu lived when i was small it was mortifying. now they already know.
Voted : Maybe there were no good old days.
Only in our selective memories are there good old days... these are the good old days and even now the revelations on things that are harmful to us are basically ignored by the masses unless it effects us on a familial or personal level...
^ I dont consider my memories to be selective from my childhood they run like a story that has no gaps so I guess you're speaking about yourself sooth. Also nowadays they tell you one thing is bad and then a month later they tell you the opposite. dont put a baby on its back,,,, do put a baby on its back... cholesterol is bad,,, cholesterol is actually good.. vitamin c is good. oh no it isnt you can overdose on it. My gran had it right all along. everyting in moderation. Unfortunately moderation isn't something that modern society has any use for.
^^Don't start, It a fact bad memories tend to fade over time in NORMAL humans while the good ones prevail lest we all would be depressed like some of us apparently are.
^ dont start what? disagreeing with you? So because I disagree then my bad memories have faded because I'm not normal?? Oh I have bad memories sooth but no amount of time has taken them away at all. Why would I want them to they are part of who I am. Bad memories are not indicative of depression and if you're implying I'm depressed then your more delusional than I thought. Depression has two levels, one is clinical that has nothing to do with memories but culminates from a drop in seratonin produced by the brain (now why would god do that eh?) the other more commom form of depression is transitory. you learn coping defences and in time the feeling fades but the memory should not except in people who want to comfort themselves AND THAT in turn creates the perfect breeding ground for depression. Don't believe me? Then explain this to me. Why do they generally suggest regression to unearth bad memories as a cure for depression. I think you will find that your statement is one of accusation rather than explanation and that you in fact are more prone to depression than the avarage. All memories fade. even the good ones. But as i said my childhood reads like a book i remember everything good and bad. But I've never considered myself depressed and neither have any of the health care professionals I have worked with who deal with depression. We all have dysfunctionality soothsayer one of yours is resorting to facts you make up.
There you go again... it seems you are always depressed and try (or need) to start needless disagreements (misery loves company ?) but it doesn't work with me. If you think I made something up, that's your problem, perhaps you should read more before you open your face. I don't have time to direct you to any website to corroborate anything. I wasted enough time responding to you already. My original comment was not directed at you it was an opinion pertaining to this ballot. You should try to do the same instead of attacking people and using the comment area to vent. Anybody can sat behind a keyboard and run their mouth instigating but they wouldn't do it in person, so stop being a jerk, and show some civility.
^ that makes no sense whatsoever. My reply to you was a disagreement with what you said. There was no uncivility in it at all. what I said is true while it may be true for you it isn't for me. You were the one suggesting I wasn't normal and you were the one suggesting i was depressed. After that I went on to explain how you were wrong. Are you suggesting I shouldn't defend myself from your silly accusations? Like the silly accusation that i should read more... I read all the time... This is how I know you're wrong. You are the only person in this whole debate that doesn't have some reservations about the way things have changed and your insight about the masses is just plain wrong. Yes you're right that anyone can sit behind a keyboard. This is very true. But it isn't true of everyone. I say whatever I feel like in person. I'm not phased by you or anyone. Seems to me it's you that is hiding behind the keyboard but we will see. if you accept the challenge then fine if not then I know you daren't fair enough? If you believe this then as we can't meet in public I challenge you to come on skype with your web cam and we'll see who runs of at the mouth. I'll tie you in knots and spit you out.
skylab: sorry 'bout the banter on your ballot not about the subject.
whatever
