COMMENTS:
I know it does, a lady died few days ago at age 60, last time she saw a doctor was at age 34 when she had her last baby, she didn't have health insurance, cause of death, heart failure, if she had preventive care maybe her heart condition would have been diagnosed and treated.
I've actually had people who don't have insurance ask me to try and diagnose and advise what to do concerning a medical condition , of course I don't but the fact they are that desperate shows the problem.
Voted : Yes it does
if there was a clinic where I could have gone for say $40 to get prescription for my meds when I was very sick and very poor, I would have had the prescription that I could have taken to walmart and got meds that are no more than $5/mo. instead, a doc visit + referral to cardiologist + test being over $1000, which I did not have, prevented me from receiving treatment when I was heartsick, broken and bankrupt. I am sure there are millions out there who are/was in my place one time or another in their lives. If there was a low cost preventative care available to me, I wouldn't have risked having a massive stroke in my 30's which would have cost the government millions in lifetime care. but it all makes sense though, this way the medical establishment can make the extra $500k each year that all important yacht.

your presumption that people "put off getting cheap treatment in hopes that it will go away" is just wrong. don't you think that if it's available to them they would take care of themselves? minimum wage earners (which there are many in US) supporting families would have to decide to either have roof over their heads or visit a doc for 30 min.

^ you either missed my point or completely contradicted yourself there LCD. I was meaning in america now as it stands. not if there was free health care. you said yourself it would have cost you $1000. instead you risked something that would have cost much more. The $1000 would have been cheaper. you put it off (or simply couldn't afford it) in the hope it didn't happen. That was the point I was making.
In fact im not sure how you came to the conclusion you did. free means just that... erm... free
Many people probably will hope it gets better and not bother to see a doctor, even a blood test to check cholesterol levels can cost more than some families can afford , or even the medication if they do have high cholesterol. Food on table for their family or medication to help stop a serious medical problem 20 years down the road, most people would choose to feed their family now and hope nothing bad happens down the road.

This answer is an axiom. I would never (could never) recieve medical treatment in America, (except minimal care fro mthe County Hospitals emergency room), with health care insurence and co-pay, or state provided medical coverage. The cost of Doctor visits and accompanying prescriptions, follow up care, ect. are just beyond the means of the average American. (especially if you are responsible for a family).
^^ Sorry, without Health care insurance....
Voted : No it doesn't
I like my health insurance. I don't like going to the doctor, but I don't want to get sick, so I go and get preventative treatments.
^ were refering to those who DONT have medical insurance klaatu
