i would have to say China, pretty hard to stop 300 million troops, military service is manditory there so they are already trained, so 300 million is a conservative estimate, no matter what technology is out there

Don't know if theres just one best. Probably the major ones have things about them that makes them stand out. Russia's military is still strong, ours is and the Isralies are. The Brits have the SAS. I think probably the top 5 or so are all strong in one way or another. Man power isnt a major strength by itself. So you got 300 million men in your army. How are you going to move 300 million soldiers? You're not. Good military is a military that has sufficient man power that you can move any where fast and then the technology and equipment to support it, like with air power and naval power. China doesn't have that. No offending China or anything but their soldiers are really not that well euqipped and some wear sneakers. I think Chinas got the man power and all but not the equipment or technology to really wage a major war. Not yet any way.

Have to go with the United States. Not only are we nuclear, but our sub-nuclear arsenal is formidable. I won't say our (ground) troops have quite as hardened a mentality as you'll find in places like Israel or Afghanistan, but in an all-out non-nuclear war we would at this point come in at #1 or worst at #2. Of course, the nature of warfare has changed enormously in the last 50, 100, and 500 years.
