MasterCard reported on Tuesday quarterly earnings as the world's second-largest credit card network raised fees to banks and trimmed expenses, while consumers used their debit cards more.

MasterCard's third-quarter net income rose to $452 million, or $3.45 per share, compared with
MasterCard
a loss of $194 million, or $1.48 per share, a year earlier. The year earlier results were affected by a litigation settlement.

Revenue rose 2 percent to $1.4 billion, boosted by higher fees charged to banks and increased consumer use of credit and debit cards, while expenses declined 13 percent to $685 million, as the company trimmed advertising and marketing spending and reduced personnel and administrative costs.

COMMENTS:
I think people should learn to live without credit cards. I've never had one, and probably will never have one. If I can't afford something there and then, I save.

People living well above their means is one of the reasons why we were in such a mess anyway.

Mastercard are in business to make money - and there are plenty of people out there who seem to think it's a birth right to have immediate and cheap access to money that isn't actually there own.

Tough luck!

They're crooks. They're trying to ram through their criminal practices before the consumer bill of rights takes full effect.

The revenue is not from increased use of consumer credit cards...it's from assessing fees and raising interest rates. The use of credit cards is down dramatically over the last year. MasterCard lies.
