It must have been ok for awhile, given the population. However, now there are more men than women in some areas, probably because of selective abortions.

During the cultural revolution it would have been very conservative and the concept of it taboo. 40 some years later I think it would be much more on the liberal side, I've heard a lot of illegal North Korean immigrants often find work in the pornographic industry in China (if they're not caught by the chinese authorities and sent back to North Korea to face 3-5 years in a hard labor camp). Pretty much all North Korean defectors are female as males are sent into the labor and military force.
I don't know how the one child law would affect it, it seems there's a lot of chinese children taken away from parents by the state which get adopted by foreigners.
Maybe better than before for women. More choices for them.
^I guess that answer would be best answered by the many male hands,and they aren't speaking.
