FORT HOOD SUSPECTS : I WONDER WHY THEY WERE HELD?

initially they reported multiple suspects.

so I guess they released them now.

I wonder why they were held?

if you have a guess, let me know, I can only think of one.

because they looked middle eastern?
because they were friends with the Jordon born shooter.

I feel sorry for the middle eastern looking soldiers, the minute some maniac goes berserk, your fellow soldiers turn their gun on you.

Voted : All the facts aren't in yet
We are slowly getting information on this horrific event. Most frightening, to me, is that the "shooter" made serious terroristic comments on various websites.
When all the "fact-finding commissions" get together, maybe we will know the truth.

we will see.

may I also say that's what's wrong with wars. it makes tiny brained hicks with guns into paranoid nazis...

again, we will see :)

I agree with SiouxLea. All of the facts are not in yet. I'm certainly not going to assume that the "suspects" they held were held because of their race. There is absolutely no substance to that. My understanding is that there were several people associated with Nadal Hassan and holding suspects is... normal. :)

^ Wait... are you saying that during this horrendous event, filled with gunfire and yelling and screaming and pure chaos, that you believe that "fellow soldiers" simply just pointed guns at all people who looked Middle Eastern?

That's not the case at all. There were two other suspects LCD, both of which have been released. There is aboslutely no evidence of "fellow soldiers turning their gun on" middle easter looking soldiers, so I don't know where that is coming from. We don't even know what race the other two suspects are and we don't know any of the information surrounding their detention. Your statement makes it sound like soldiers went on some kind of witch hunt and pointed guns at all middle eastern looking soldiers. I'm sorry, not at all trying to be a jerk here, but that statement really baffles me because it is not based on anything. Sorry! :)
by patch22us on Fri Nov 06, 09 1:37pm [+]

it's pure guess on my part.

I will gladly eat crow if it turns out otherwise.
by LCD on Fri Nov 06, 09 1:39pm [+]

But honestly, no offense, but it's not a guess. That kind of thinking is... paranoia. :) Sorry, but my mind just does not work that way.

I mean what is it you expect to have happened during all that chaos? Be realistic here. First of all, I sincerely doubt that while this guy Hassan was MURDERING all those people, that the people tyrinig to stop were thinking "he's a Mulsim... get all MUSLIMS!" No. Have you ever witnessed any kind of event like this? One in which there is blood and shooting and people running and screaming? It must be pure chaos. So no, I truly do not think that "fellow soldiers" pointed their guns at "middle eastern looking" soldiers...not for one minute.

So based upon your assumptions, then that must happen all the time in Afghanistan and Iraq, right? I mean these "non Middle Eastern looking" soldiers must just be shooing their fellow soldiers... who look middle eastern... all the time. :)

No. I don't think we'll find what you thin to be the case at all. How many thousands of people are stationed at Ft. Hood and they detained just two other people?

by patch22us on Fri Nov 06, 09 1:44pm [+]

Okay, I now have more information.

Did most people realize that the soldiers at Ft. Hood are unarmed? The soldiers there do not carry weapons. The Ft. has MP's and civilian security that patrol the perimeter. The soldiers are not armed because it is a base located on U.S. soil. The arms are kept secured, so soldiers do not walk around at Ft. Hood with guns.

The local police actually had to come in response and a female Police Officer is credited with stopping Nadal Hassan. The shootings happened inside the medical facility. In effect, Nadal Hassan shot people who were unarmed and he did so with his own civilian weapon and not an army weapon.
by patch22us on Fri Nov 06, 09 2:06pm [+]

yeah. I admit, it maybe paranoia.

but that paranoia is coming from 40 years of experience, years of people acting and reacting in my observation. I frankly would love to see that it was something else.

I hate what I am, I wasn't like this when I was at your age, I was idealistic and full of dreams. if it wasn't, and I hope it wasn't, I will buy the beers, what can I say?

all I can say is I wish I see the world as I imagined as an idealistic boy I once was...
by LCD on Fri Nov 06, 09 2:20pm [+]

:) Well given the new information I posted, we now know none of these soldiers could have pointed a gun at anyone... they were unarmed. :)

I understand what you're saying, but it's also important to be pragmatic and not assume. In other words, this is the way of the world.

Take this scenario: a man opens fire inside an elementary school, shooing randomly at anyone and anything. He escapes. When asked to describe the killer, all say "he was white, about 5.11, blond hair, blue eyes, athletic build and he was wearing a white shirt and jeans."

What kinds of people are the police and FBI going to look for and perhaps even investigate? If the head detecitve is African-American and he orders his force to keep an eye out for someone fitting that description and let's stay I get stopped...is it because the Cop was Black and I'm White so it must be racism? Or was I stopped because I happen to fit that description?

I'm just saying that even though what you wrote didn't actually happen, I also realize that in the real world, things aren't always so black and white (no pun intended. :)

Voted : because they looked middle eastern?
Possibly. If it was, he shooter brought it on himself. Life will be very different from now on for middle eastern servicemen in the US military. His actions will cause the abuse and profiling he raged against.
