COMMENTS:
One must be philosophical about how one answers a question like this. How does one know what is philosophy and what is pure bollocks?

So "nerds" stop to think about life... while the cool people march on like a bunch of robots

I understand your frustation, Daemon15: this is a really difficult question to answer. Specially since one doesn't really get which question you actually have to answer. Are the "yes" and "no" options referred to the "ARE ANY OF YOU INTERESTED IN PHILOSOPHY?" question, or are they referred to the "has the love of knowledge and effort to discouver the meaning of this life, and many other important questions completely been given up?" one?

Anyways, I don't think philosophy and the search for the truth can ever die. It's something inherent to the human spirit. It has nothing to do with being a nerd or not. It has to do with being an individual and overcoming the generality, it has to do with thinking about what you see and feel.

Philosophy is what makes us human. And philosophy is what allowes us to know so.

The unexamined life is not worth living.
by SomeGuy on Tue Jan 27, 04 7:06pm [+]

ahahahaha, lemme guess, Anonymous, you don't like Descartes, huh?

Oh, well, listen, you're not the first one. I mean, Pascal took it personal and said something like "damn, that moron deserves to die!", but heh, no need to get offended by philosophical absolute truths. I mean, it's just like Kant said, whether what seems to surround us is real or not, whether what we see and feel is real or not, if we just limit ourselves to say "maybe, maybe not", we're not getting anywhere. Is this world a dream? Maybe, but then again, we have sensory evidence... And since the objective of philosophy is to find the truth, we should assume at least a part of this is true.

That's why Kant started that whole "phenomenon" and "noumenon" deal. You know, he said that what we feel from reality is the "phenomenon", while the reality, that we can't ever feel is the "noumenon". This is where the "tainted glass" metaphore kicks in. See, there's an apple. An apple, a composition of atoms and energy and blah blah blah. But all we see is an image of that apple filtered through our particular tainted glass. That tainted glass is made of feelings, ideas, etc. To see the "noumenon" (the apple), we would have to look at it objectively. Bus since we're human beings and we can't separate ourselves from our feelings, concepts, ideas, etc (tainted glass), we can only have a subjective image of it.

The "cogito ergo sum" deal is the only TRUTH we can be sure of. That's why it was so important. It doesn't mean we have to limit our vision of this world to it.

Oh well, I don't know why I wrote all that... Oh, yeah, to say that philosophy ain't just pointless intellectualism. I agree with SomeGuy, here. Isn't it a little bit sad to be in a world without even trying to figure out what that world is?

Yeah, I was a faggot in another life. I'm almost sure of it, because I have this weird obsession with my boyfriend's rectum. That must be why I ponder the meaning of life. Moron.

People, in general, are dumb. Look around even this one website--I ran a spell check on it just for fun and it crashed my Mac! No one cares about knowledge, logic or meaning--people don't even care about simple language rules!

Bad spelling=Ignorance I don't think it can be so radically stated. However, that is not the subject on this poll or is it?
by Luna on Sun Feb 01, 04 8:35am [+]

Smat, Descartes reasoning was illogical in many statements in his Meditations. "I think therefore I am" should be replaced by the more appropriate, "I think I think, therefore I believe I am." The only valid philosophical argument is the Skeptical argument.

Yes. Why is it, that you can sit on the toilet for half an hour douching with an enema bag, nothing comes out, but the minute you step into a crowded elevator, your bowels loosen explosively?!?

What if when you're dreaming its the reality and the "reality" is the dream?

What if the reason for death of old age is from being deprived of the 3rd need. Example: you can live without water for about 3 days, food about 30, and the 3rd need 70-120 yrs????
by jakesnake5 on Jul 15, 2004

--------
What if this life is a dream from a supernatural creature that we will be in the next life, and in our past life we were the dreams that we dream now. (I dont believe this but its just some crap I come up with)
