INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT - US PARTICIPATION, YES OR NO

[+] ballot by scifibabe
created Fri Aug 01, 03

The United States played a central role in the precursors to the ICC: the Nuremberg trials, the international tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda, and the Sierra Leone court. Yet the U.S. government always demanded a high degree of control over the Court and resisted its authority to prosecute U.S. military and government officials. President Clinton authorized signing -- but not ratifying -- the Rome Statute on December 31, 2000, just before leaving office and on the deadline set by the statute. In May 2002, a new position emerged as the Bush administration nullified the United States' signature on the Rome Statute. In so doing, the administration withdrew U.S. support for the creation of the ICC and asserted the exclusion of U.S. citizens from the ICC's jurisdiction.

Should the United States become a member of the International Criminal Court?

Yes
No
The US should be included in the jurisdiction

COMMENTS:
Its a simple choice really, become part of the world, USA, or be permanently ostracised by the rest of the world. The lessons of history are there for anyone to study. When a country tries to go down the road of imperialism, they inevitably become and irrelevance in the world. All the worlds empires have gone through this and all have fallen. Rome is now just the capital of an irrelevant european country. The land of Alexander the Great, Macedonia is a little backwater, the British Empire that rule one quarter of the earths land mass is now just insignificant island of the coast of mainland Europe that still clings on to an imperial past. The Austro-Hungarian empire has also gone the way of the dodo as have the Mongols of Ghengis Khan and the great civilisations of the Egyptians, the Mayans and the Aztecs.

Lets try and strive for an internationalist agenda and have everyone reach out and understand our neighbours, instead of instilling hatred and fear.

If we learn to understand our fellow humans we can then unite as one race and explore the stars......its worth a try dont you think?

The US wants to lead, but a leader must be accountable to be respected.

the iCC is not an excuse to dump on the US and Israel, in fact the man who pushed for this court is from Trinidad, a very neutral country
