conciousness is just a trick our brains play on us. we are simply a complex evolved organism that reacts to various stimuli and symbols. every behavior is geared toward survival and procreation. the simplest answer is that humans exist to replicate and follow the basic laws of physics. sentamentality is just a chemical swithboard mechanism to direct behavior toward self sustainment.
Ms_Knowitall, our purpose here on earth is to improve - not only to improve ourselves, but to leave the world a little better than it was before we got here.

If there is no set "purpose", then perhaps everyone has their own purpose, defined by their character and morality? Maybe we choose our purpose for living and don't know it? Our actions and the influence we have would be done in the likeness of our purpose, otherwise, if we are all here for a reason; some 'fate' that our lives will be directed by, then how can we have any free will? Can we avoid our purposes in life? Whatever. I say it's tits and ass, hockey and beer. That's all I need in life.

There is so much unhappiness in people`s faces rich or poor,old or young.I most of the time think we are here to suffer and not get what we wish for.

If our purpose in life is to make the world a better place for those we leave behind and to keep the human race alive we may as well all die now.
First of all we as humans are doing the earth damage just by living. Over-population of our species is the worst thing to ever have happened to our planet. You say we're here to make life better for those left behind when we die who in turn make life better for those left behind when they die, and they in turn make life better for those left behind when they die and keeps on going in a continuous circle forever. Eventually the sun will destroy our planet or a comet will collide into it or the universe will cave in on itself or all energy will be lost to outer space or something like that. And if none of these things happen because by that time the human race has achieved unbelievable scientific advancements and is able to stop its own destruction or because of some other reason, it will just continue for all enternity for absolutely no reason at all. What would be the point in keeping our species alive forever. And what would be the point of material or social success or achieving your goals. We wont care when we're dead!
As said in the greatest book ever written "everything is vanity and a striving after wind, and there is nothing of advantage under the sun."
Our purpose must be something else higher than we ourselves are.
Life is not worth 70 or 80 years or suffering and hardship just to end up dead.

Hi CouchGnome. If this is what you believe, why bother doing anything? What illusory "purpose" is achieved by your trying to convince people that their identity is a myth?
To grow and develop spiritually and win the battle against the evil in our own nature and help fight it in the world
We all came from Universal Oneness.
Life is a journey.
During the journey, we live, we love, we experience.
When we die, we bring our life experience with us and go back to join the Universal Oneness again.

Since life is a journey, during this journey, we live, we love, we experience. The purpose of our lives during this journey, in my opinion, will be:
To contribute to the betterment of humanity.
To contribute to the betterment of universal goodness.
So that when we die, we will bring good karma to the universal oneness.
Remember, all mankind is connected.

I dunno about you guys but I'm here to orgasm, eat good food, laugh, and not understand one damn thing until like 2 seconds before I die. At which time I'll be occupied with a beer and won't get to tell anyone. Then I will rot and feed plants which will feed cows which will feed my children. Now I gotta go choke down my grandpa with blue cheese dressing.
