hmm, your question is a bt confusing. You ask if African Americans should complain about slavery and then you saythey would have lived with bad standards if they werent slaved. What are we supposed to say, were very happy we were slaved? I think not. If you mean why people complain about unequal rights, well it's simply because people are still racist now and then. See if a white person robs your house, you say ohh that person is fucked up and a low life. If a black man robs your home people quickly generalize and say, well he was black that's why. All we want is for society to not label us and see us for the people we are on a personal basis, instead of judging us based on skin color. Is that too much to ask?
I'm not asking all black people to thank us for enslaving them, all I'm trying to point out is that as terrible as it was, the optimists side is that black people in America have a better life than those in Africa (I know, I've been to both).
As for people saying that crime is because they are black is wrong, but I do believe that statistically African Americans have a higher crime rate than white people, so in some ways a sterotypical attitude is likely to occur. Though, I can also see the point that many African Americans are forced into crime due to discrimination etc...but the world is much less racist than it has ever been, in someways in job applications etc...it is becoming racist towards white people, i.e. with affirmative action etc...
I think the only real way to stop this is by as you said judging people on their own merits in all aspects of life, and I think that no group of people should be sterotyped by the past i.e. when a black person breaks into a house, recognise that this individual is a fucking asshole and should be put in jail, not because of his colour, but because thats what the hell he is! and on the other side that white people should not all be thought of as black haters based on the fact that our ancestors carried out terrible crimes.

yeah well, this all sounds good in philosophy but people choose to be arrogant. It's realy a problem in America in general. Stereotyping is probably the publics #1 passtime! If the germans were responsible for the 9/11 attacks do you think they would have got ther same backlash and discrimination as the Arabs? Maybe a little bit but I think ultimatly things would go back to normal fast because their white. I'm not saying this is only a problem in America but we claim to be smart people and openminded so we have less of an excusse to act irrational and generalize. I realy dont understand why ethnicity and race plays such a huge role in America. The only thing I can think of is that it's because of eurocentrism. They still ask you for your race when you fill out forms and applications. Some say it's because of targetet marketing, estimating income, special treatments, etc...do we realy need to know everybodies race? Specialy now when we see alot of people who come from a mixed background. Anyway, obviously there is still an emohasize on race and ethnicity and unfortumatly it turns out to be a negative thing for the most part.

Slavery was disgusting whether it brought about the better lifestyle of blacks or not (that was just a positive side effect of a negative cause.) However, I don't believe blacks of today should be demanding special rights because of something that happened to their ancestors. Likewise, they shouldn't be generalized and have any rights of citizens taken away from them either.
