COMMENTS:
Neo-conservatives led by William Kristol, the Christian Right, and corporations with global aspirations. The takeover begain in the 1970s with Moral Majority, the push to have Reagan in the White House, and alienation of old-school conservatives like Barry Goldwater.
Crooks like Agnew and Nixon sold them out.
I seriously believe that the Republican party has been hijacked by NeoConservatives, aided by the Religious Right. True Republicans have been marginalized by extremists, and their original ideals cast by the wayside.
No true Republican -- or true Conservative -- would stand idly by for the Bush budget deficit, the incredible growth of government agencies (homeland security duplicates dozens of existing agencies), increased government control/influence (mandatory testing, vouchers, faith-based subsidies, Precription Drug legislation), etc.
Not to mention a pre-emptive war to remove another country's leader because "he was bad for their people."
I think Cathexis is right on the money here... I mean the true republicans need to step up and take their party back
Exactly the same thing happened to Britain's Labour Party. They were elected on sound Labour principles but rapidly turned into tories. The backbench Labour MPs are too scared of losing their seats to stand up for their political principles.
Real republicans, who aren't rich, still stand by the first bit. That's what happened. I still believe in isolationism in a rather huge way.
