COMMENTS:
You got it all wrong. All liberalism has got to do is free ECONOMY. Not individual rights. But that does not imply conservatism fights against a free economy - it simply tries to preserve the natural relations between people and nature (or so they say). Liberalist movement is against all nature in their quest for a free economy and more money. If they can get more money by letting people have more rights, then this works for them. But this again does not imply that conservatism is against freedom rights at the base, only if these rights affect and destroy the natural balance of the world (pollution & stuff, you know). Of course these are only words by now, when each and every politician strives for himself...

liberalism promotes individualism, and along with that a free economy. liberals believe in an economy with less government intervention, which some theorists believe would allow the individual to survive. some theorists such as john rawls believe that wealth should be re distrubited by the government to aid those less fortunate. this would in turn aid individualism, according to some. liberalism, in my own opinion does not have much in common with 'communism', because communism seems to penetrate all aspects of society in order to establish equal rights. liberalism welcomes the generation of wealth by some, however as unfair as it may seem, seek to take that wealth through methods such as taxation for redistribution.
Most people in the US are embarrassingly ignorant on the real definitions of communism, capitalism, liberalism, and conservatism. I don't mean that as an attack, just a simple statement of fact; for 40+ years, I was in the same group. We know what we've been told and rarely question. Worse, we in the US have been conditioned to react to labels. Communism = All that is Evil. Capitalism = Freedom. In the past 20 years or so, the same approach has been applied to Liberal and Conservative labels. Strangely, many of the very people who would be helped most, have become conditioned to actively hate and loathe some socio-economic platforms. In addition, what is currently passing for Conservatism in the US ... isn't. While it sounds cliched, even to me, I have to admit that I see a large movement in the US that is, for all practical purposes, proto-Fascist. But, without that handy label, people have no hesitency to flock to its banner. We have developed a knee-jerk condition to see life in binary terms: Good and Evil, Black and White. When one group successfully co-opts the labeling, the other camp becomes evil and the enemy. Obviously, it is easier to hate than to think.
Yeah, I don't get it either. Hmm, doesn't communism mean "everything" is owned equally by the people? What liberal do you know that pushes for that. Then people will say Liberals are "socialists" (??) Isn't that were the govnt owns everything (in simplified terms anyway) And I don't think liberals try to put everybody in the same economic class, they want to help people though that are in need of help (govnt assisted programs) but they can still be capitalistic. Now being a Democrat may be a bit diffrent wich I think people confuse.
You lost me at hello
Guest 597: You are right with your first two statements. However, the big differences between Communism and true Liberalism, true Conservatism are: 1)Communism denies the spiritual existence of mankind. 2)Communism denies the private ownership of its citizens. Thus, Communism denies the essence of true Liberalism - mankind's spiritual liberty. In my opinion, we need true Liberalism and true Conservatism in this country. We should reject Pseudo-Liberalism (ex. The New York Times, The Washington Post, etc.) Pseudo-Conservatism (ex. Neo-Con thugs in Washington) We absolutely do not want Communism!
